webprinter Posted October 4, 2009 #1 Share Posted October 4, 2009 We plan to spend a couple days prior to our cruise in Galveston. Are there any shops that sell the large Talvera pots for plants? If there aren't any in Galveston, where are the closest? Are there any good authentic inexpensive Mexican restaurants in Galveston? And lastly, has anyone stayed at the Baymont hotel? We can use our timeshare points there plus they offer free parking, although I don't know if you have to book a special package for the free parking. KOOLBEANS Posted October 4, 2009 #2 Share Posted October 4, 2009 I really like Galveston, although have not seen the pots, I mostly do the typical tourist shopping. I have been to "Salsas" and was not impressed. I have a personal favorite for Galveston, although this is not Mexican, it is a wonderful place to eat, hang out, watch the goins on, it is called "The Spot". This is a inexpensive, fun place with awesome food, i.e. burgers, seafood, cold drinks, etc. Lots of fun and I think Friday evenings appetizers are half price. The shrimp kisses are heavenly! I also don't think you have to have any kind of package to park for free. I have never stayed there but most, not all, you just get to park for free.... Ask away if you have any questions.... Galveston Cruiser Posted October 4, 2009 #3 Share Posted October 4, 2009 For plant pots, try Tom's Thumb Nursery on 45th. Our favorite is the Original Mexican Cafe on 14th and Market. Awesome Margarita's. In business over 90 years.
jonyyuma Posted October 4, 2009 #4 Share Posted October 4, 2009 I second THE ORIGINAL Mexican resturant, it is a great place to eat.I never pass up a chance to eat there, when in town... We LOVED the drinks there too and it is affordable.... ALAS. The beach house out on Jamaica beach was destroyed by the storm. But WE still Cruise. JY. ssb Posted October 4, 2009 #5 Share Posted October 4, 2009 :DSecond the Original Mexican For Central American Style Seafood and Steaks try Rudy and Pacos on 21st and Post Office. Expensive but meals large enough to share. No shorts allowed except at bar. Good martinis also. Two of our favorites appetizers are (which we share and have a hard time finishing) a carmalized calamari with onions and peppers and a KT Del Mar - Large tomatoes, avocados slices, crab meat and side ceveche and with rasberry sausa along with plaintains
ssb Posted October 4, 2009 #6 Share Posted October 4, 2009 Sorry to hear about your house. Are you coming back. We live in Galveston in town, and are just now getting house back to somewhat normality. Still don't have yard. Salt killed everything. We had 4-5 ft water at house and 1 ft water in house. It has been a trying year. We went ahead and cruised transatlantic Christmas New Years 08 because of lack of progress at house. Glad you are still cruising.
