Tu917 Posted May 16, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 16, 2004 I know this has been talked about before but my search is not working. I'm considering a new camera and would like to know what everyone loves and why. I have seen some beautiful pictures that people have put on these boards. I currently have a Sony that has the little CD inside. Thanks
jsargent34 Posted May 16, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 16, 2004 I purchased a Minolta DiMage Z2 about a month ago and just love it. My only comparison was to a Nikon CP 4300 and it blows it out of the water. It has 10X zoom which is great. My only complaint about the camera is that there is no underwater housing... Folgy Posted May 16, 2004 #4 Share Posted May 16, 2004 I have always stuck with Kodak. Mostly because of the software that comes with it.Easy Share ...really easy to download/saveAs/print /edit/mail/sizing ie., best for web best for e-mail etc. I now have the LS633 with the 6000 printer photo dock. Desertbelle Posted May 16, 2004 #5 Share Posted May 16, 2004 I have a Canon Powershot S-45. It's 4 megapixels, the newest version is S-50 and is 5 megapixels. I researched a lot before buying the camera and found many to have great reviews, and decided on the Canon based on reviews and on a friend who really liked his. I was also interested in a camera I could buy an underwater case for. I love my camera....though I am still just learning how to use it well. I imagine there are features I will never get around to learning!! My best suggestion would be to buy as much megapixel as you can afford in a quality, top-rated camera. You will get many years of great fun and usage from it!! erin_cruisers Posted May 16, 2004 #7 Share Posted May 16, 2004 We have one Kodak DX6490, two 6320's, and a 6300 in our family, which all connect to our Kodak printer dock (and 2 camera docks). "Sharing' is the keyword, and as FOLGY stated above, the software is really key. Within minutes of sitting any of the cameras on the printer or our two Camera Docks, the computer is uploading the pics, resizing those that have been marked for emailing, and if you want, automatically emailing them as well. The 6490 connects to the TV directly, but the Printer/Camera docks also connect to the TV so that you can put on slide shows. During the slide show, friends will say,"I want a copy of that one", and voila, push a button, and at the end of your slide shows, the printer prints out all the 4x6 prints you want. THAT is cool! Simultaneously, the dock is charging the cameras internal batteries. All these features are what convinced us to go Kodak. But Desertbelle is right, read lot's of reviews to see what is best FOR YOU! Folgy Posted May 16, 2004 #8 Share Posted May 16, 2004 erin_cruisers, My fatherinlaw just bought a new Kodak with 5 megapixels and loading dock. He has just e-mailed me a few short mpeg movies off of his camera and my server says it times out before all the information is sent.Yet, I mpeg some short 5 second movies to him.He says the sound and picture is really good.Do you think it is his camera or my server, that I cannot receive his mpeg e-mails.?? 4 cruisers Posted May 16, 2004 #9 Share Posted May 16, 2004 I have the Sony CD Mavica and just got the Casio Exilim and love it!!!!!!!! Took it on our last cruise and have never taken so many pictures! It fit in my evening bag so I took it all the time! Its port easily connected to my computer (I just leave it there for downloading and charging when I'm home). The picture quality is every bit as good as my Sony at a fraction of the price and on top of it...it's super user friendly! I can't say enough good things about it! I love being able to print my picture on the spot!. I wanted the Hp,but DH talked me into this one.. One word of caution, about all cameras.Ours was 299 when we bought it.(camera & dock) by the time we got through with ex mem, batteries, case,ex warranty and printer. We were over 700...Already used the warranty though.MY DS dropped it,and the lens would not open, handed it in,and they gave us a new one on the spot. 4 cruisers Posted May 16, 2004 #15 Share Posted May 16, 2004 Folgy, I guess that must have been what he meant. I'm sorry I wasn't more clear...I am still learning everyday about computers, cameras, pixels, speed, etc., etc.!!! I know we have DSL and our computer speed isn't what it should be, but there seems to be nothing we can do about it. It makes sense to send a smaller file which would still have great picture quality for internet sharing...at least I think that's true! sherry7 Posted May 16, 2004 #17 Share Posted May 16, 2004 I have a Olympus C-50. I bought it in Nov. 2002, almost as soon as it was released on the US market. I love, love, love, my camera. It is a 5 megapixel, and has a 3x optical zoom. It was $599 when I bought it, but I've seen it recently for $320-$350. I saw it at Sam's Club a couple of months ago, and Amazon's price on it jumps around, occasionally dropping quite low (with no tax of course). It isn't one of the super mini cameras, but it is quite small and easy to carry around. It does have an underwater housing available, but it's fairly pricey (around $150). Now that the camera itself is coming down in price, I'm hoping that the underwater housing will too...like maybe before my cruise in January. I think someone might have already posted this above, but there are great camera reviews on www.steves-digicams.com and www.dpreview.com . It seems that alot of you are buying Kodak cameras primarily because of the EasyShare software and its simplicitiy of use. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't this a free download for anyone? I use it myself occasionally, although I usually prefer a more comprehensive program like Photoshop Elements 2.0. Just my 2 cents...don't buy a camera because of the bundled software. erin_cruisers Posted May 17, 2004 #18 Share Posted May 17, 2004 Sorry FOLGY for not answering you right away. I took a brief siesta. I have not sent mpegs. via email, but I have taken a few movies. I agree with some of the above posts, that the problem is very likely just the sheer size of the files. High speed or low speed, a lot of mail servers choke on really big files. The secret is to upload to a site via ftp, then everyone can get the movies there. Or, just take/send shorter movies. You can also buy software that chops up movies, and puts them back together again, but that sound too much like work. LOL Good luck, have fun, and above all... ...get thyself into a bote... erin_cruisers Posted May 17, 2004 #20 Share Posted May 17, 2004 Sherry7: Your absolutely right about the free download. And when I considered my DX6490, the software wasn't a factor at that point. Your right also about buying a camera for the camera features not the software. The easyshare software is however the 'Icing on the cake'. If you look at the back of a Kodak CX/DX camera you will see the red jewelled Share button. This is what interacts with the camera and ultimately the software. After taking a pic, then pushing the share button you can decide at that point whether to email, print, etc. and even select email addresses in the camera. But at the end of the day, it's whether you enjoy taking pictures with an easy to use camera. If so, you'll use the camera, if not, it sits in the case. I have a very expensive, very bulky 35MM that gathers dust in my closet. So I would encourage anyone to not just read reviews, etc, but actually go into a camera shop and get a 'feel' for the camera. (Especially if their is $$$ involved.) IMHO. Grandeur of the Seas 05-31-

Midwest Jim Posted May 17, 2004 #24 Share Posted May 17, 2004 cnet.com is a great website for reviews. And as odd as this sounds, eBay is probably your best bet for great prices. For me, high resolution in a compact case was important. I found the Kodak DX4530 gave me the best tradeoff for size, resolution and standardization of memory (SD/MMC). Incidentally, the 1GB card is now available in the SD format. Just be careful not to get a memory storage format that is on the verge of being phased out.
