Did you find them useful? :) thanks![/quote yes we have taken them , get ones with lots of channels because many others have them too. bestbuy costco bjs walmart target , all have them . they do work well and cheaper then the cell phones, but many people could be on your channel so that gets tricky. we just after a couple days decide that if we cant find someone then we go it alone , and have fun , we allways find each other at some piont . good luck, have fun . BIG_Steve Posted October 10, 2009 #3 Share Posted October 10, 2009 They aren't legal to use in all ports though. Some of the frequencies that are free for citizens to use in the USA are used for firefighters, and other important services in some other countries. I don't know how to find out, other than starting a google search.
Cruise-Crazy Posted October 10, 2009 #4 Share Posted October 10, 2009 If you buy them get the higher powered GMRS radios, the FRS only radios are low power and will not work as well.
lsycko1 Posted October 10, 2009 #5 Share Posted October 10, 2009 We brought them on the first cruise with our DN. They "worked', however, there were so many people using the same channels that it quickly became frustrating. just my 2 cents!
Cruise-Crazy Posted October 11, 2009 #6 Share Posted October 11, 2009 If you use the "privacy codes" you will not hear the others on that channel.
MaiTaiMary Posted October 11, 2009 Author #7 Share Posted October 11, 2009 Can anybody give me a rough idea how much they cost? Just the least expensive kind that will work on the ship.
ecps92 Posted October 16, 2009 #8 Share Posted October 16, 2009 GMRS Requires a License and that license is valid in the USA Only. Some of the GMRS are valid in Canada, but your USA License isn't. FRS is good in the USA, Canada and Mexico, but you need to obtain one that is TYPE Accepted in All 3 countries [RARE] Once you get our of North America, those channels [FRS and GMRS] are used by Public Safety agencies and you could be endangering them. Even the FRS Radios can interfere with the Cruise [Hotel Operations] Ship radios which are [some] on the same frequencies. If you buy them get the higher powered GMRS radios, the FRS only radios are low power and will not work as well.
grandislandgirl Posted October 16, 2009 #9 Share Posted October 16, 2009 Okay, so the question remains - what walkies DO work on the ship? Which are okay/the best kind to use.
ecps92 Posted October 16, 2009 #10 Share Posted October 16, 2009 they all work, your milage will vary from one end of the spectrum to the other a.) Who else is on your channel [shared with cruisers, the ship and ...??] b.) Remember you are in a Metal Box, signals don't travel well, reguarless of the band. some better than others, some not as well. See what the ship RENTS or SELLS, for the price [used once a year] they can't be that bad. Asking this is like asking all of us what is the best CAR / TRUCK or a Computer. It's all about what you want from it and what you plan on using them for. [Computers will vary from casual e-mail to Die-Hard Gaming] 1.) What do you want out of the Radio [coverage, privacy] 2.) How Big a Radio [batteries - Recharge? or Disposable] 3.) What is your need for a radio [sticky notes work well too] Okay, so the question remains - what walkies DO work on the ship? Which are okay/the best kind to use.
