We have been booked in Stateroom 4166 (Upper Promenade) on the Oosterdam and it has a double balcony so we are excited about that. What offers could be a better deal than that? Just don't know what to expect.

I would say, don't expect anything. But if it does happen, then deal with it then. Sometimes stuff that hits you out of left field is the best.

Hopefully, you will become addicted to cruising as are so many on this board.

Be sure to check out the Ports of Call section of CC. There's lots of great info on Alaska there. It is an awesome destination. Have done an Alaska cruise once and hope to do a cruisetour there with my family in 2011.

Feel free to ask your 'newbie' questions. We should be able to give you useful information or direct you to good sources. The 'Search' option is also useful, but sometimes you need more info before you even know how to ask the question, that's where we come in.

It is when the cruise line tries to sell you a category above the one you already booked at a discounted price.

We had a Cat. A Verandah booked. About 3 weeks prior to sailing, we received an offer through our travel agent to move up to a SA category for $199 per person extra.

We took the the offer and were very happy with our suite. Not only was the size of the cabin a very nice upgrade, but the other 'suite' amenities made the extra cost worth it. With a Suite, you have unlimited laundry at no cost. You also have the use of the Neptune Lounge which includes concierge service.

This was our 9th HAL cruise and the first time we've been offered the upsale. We have been upgraded to a higher category cabin at no charge, but never to a suite.

I believe that HAL offers upsells because they can then fill your lower category cabin easier than they can fill higher category cabins.
