James Ivan McLean, 63, of San Antonio died Monday evening after putting up a brave 2 year fight against a very rare cancer of the appendix. His life-partner of 36 years, Joe Queen was at his side when he left us for a better place without pain and suffering. Ivan was born in Huntsville, AL on July 20, 1946 the tenth of eleven children of John Ernest and Cariwyl Sturkie McLean. After graduating from Spartanburg High School in SC, he attended Duke University before transferring to the University of Texas in Austin, Texas earning degrees in Math and English. He earned a Masters Degree from Webster College in Hospital Administration. From there he returned to the University of Texas at Austin earning his PhD. in Adult and Continuing Education. In addition to his life companion Joe Queen of San Antonio, Ivan is survived by six brothers and three sisters; Carrie Will (Erling) Valerius of Columbiana, AL, John (Opal) McLean of San Jose, CA, Janice Watson of Lafayette, IN, Tom McLean of Bartlett, TX, Joe (Betsy) McLean of Murphreesboro, NC, Dorothy (Charles) West of Columbus, GA, Ernest (Peggy) McLean of Taylor, TX, and Edsel McLean and Douglas Eugene (Edie) McLean of Gainesville, FL. He was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Dale and Rudolph Schroeder of Baton Rouge, LA. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Ivan spent almost his entire career working for the Army Medical Department at the Academy of Health Sciences. Most recently as the Chief of Extension Training where Combat Training Manuals, many types of Extension Training materials, etc. used in the medical training of all military personnel were produced. He was a kind, compassionate exceptional individual always looking out for the less fortunate and participated with others in the civil rights march in Selma, AL. He and Joe loved to travel and had cruised almost the entire world. Gardening was also a great love of Ivan's. His wishes were to be cremated and his ashes spread at sea. Honoring his request, there will be no funeral services. Ivan and Joe would like all to remember him as they knew him in a few moments of silent prayer in their own way or faith. In lieu of flowers, if one so desires, they may send monetary memorials in the name of James I. McLean for research in PMP (Pseudomyxoma Peritonei) or related areas of cancer to: Dr. Scott Ulmer, c/o South Texas Oncology and Hematology, PA, 8715 Village Dr., San Antonio, TX 78217 or M.D. Anderson Hospital, c/o Robert A. Wolf, MD, 1400 Holcomb Blvd., Unit 421, Houston, TX 77030. Joe and the family would especially like to thank all the staff and doctors of; Methodist Stone Oak Hospital, Dr. Scott Ulmer and staff of South Texas Oncology and Hematology, PA, Dr. Robert Wolf and staff of M.D. Anderson, Department of Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology, the staff of Odyssey Hospice, and the staff of Caring Companions of S.A. HIS JOURNEY ON EARTH IS OVER, BUT HE LIVES IN EACH OF US BECAUSE OF HAVING TOUCHED US! Arrangements are with:

Hello everyone,

I'm sorry to have to say that Ivan McLean, who originated this group, has lost his battle with cancer and has died. I'm sorry not to have an address for condolences but if anyone did know Ivan or his surviving spouse, Joseph, please pass it along.

Ivan was a gentle and kind man and will surely be missed.
