Can we carry our own luggage off the ship

Last time we took a cruise we placed most of our luggage in the hall the night before we left the ship. Can we skip trying to find our luggage and take it off with us? Is there a limit of how much you can carry on and off?

Yes you can carry it off. Just go when they call your deck for self-disembarkation.

The only limit is how much you can carry.

 

You will have to check large bags for embarkation, since big suitcases won't fit through the x-ray machines.

No, there is no limit how much you can carry, but YOU need to know YOUR own limit, as to how much you can comfortably carry, walking long distances, and sometimes walking up/down stairs since the elevators typically are packed and takes for ever to get into one.

Does it save time to carry our own bags?

 

Depends largely on the ship and the itinerary. Many short cruise do NOT offer self-disembark, because so many guests have only carry ons. On the longer cruise, self-disembark sometimes go out first. There have been many threads about this. Personally, I never want to be the first ones to leave as it's just too stressful.

I did this once. There were many bags but between DW and myself we could stack them in a way that we could roll the big pieces and tote the smaller ones.

 

The only problem was that it was not possible to use the elevators! We had to navigate the stairs with all these bags, and the stairs were packed such that it took 15 minutes to move down a flight. The elevators were useless because there was no room for people to exit them, so they just sat there in the elevators.

 

All this nightmare was due to the ship not be cleared for passengers to exit. The ship was a few hours late arriving due to weather, and the customs and immigration people were not prepared for the arrival, apparently. It was a horrible experience!

It depends...we just got off the Victory that sails out of Puerto Rico. We were NOT allowed to self-disembark....but I think there is some special rule because we sailed in and out of Puerto Rico. Every other cruise we were allowed to self-disembark.

Most of the time we do self disembark. If you carry a lot of luggage then I wouldn't do it. The reason we do it is because platinum guests (10 or more cruises) get to disembark first. We usually carry 4 pieces of luggage and stack them on top of each other and then pull them out. They are heavy so we usually get a porter as soon as we get into the main building. It has been my experience that the porters seem to get you through the immigration lines quicker.
