sail charter on ambergris caye??

we are planning on catching a flight up to AC when we get to belieze. our intent is to find a sailboat or catamaran to take us out snorkeling and just hang out get away from the crowds. i am having a hard time finding a charter online that is not too expensive(most that i have talked with have been $1,000 or better). it will be just me and my wife, and i was wondering if anyone who had been to AC for the day had done this or had at least seen some sailboats to get out on that go to other places than the usual cruise ship excursions.
