Surveillance Video Catches TSA Theft

Police released new surveillance video of a Spokane TSA Screener convicted of stealing drugs out of passenger's luggage.

 

Screener Wendy Swason's co-workers turned her in for swiping pain killers out of the bags she was supposed to be searching for explosives.

 

A hidden camera caught her in the act of stealing and even swallowing a passenger's pills.

 

Now the airport is bringing in explosive detection machines that search for compounds to power bombs, which mean fewer bags will have to be opened by screeners.

 

Spokane International Airport Spokesman Todd Woodard says, "it's the same technology you see in places like New York, Dallas, Miami, and some of the largest airports in the country and we think that using that technology will provide a safer environment for our travelers as well as providing a much more efficient system."

 

 

 

The airport plans to have five of the detection systems up and running by the busy Easter travel season.

It is good to hear that steps are being taken to protect the travelers.

 

Our suitcase are always searched when we are leaving from our small hometown airport, but never searched in the larger cities, such as Atlanta. Must be the machines that do the work.

I think that they should have the some indication of who is searching your luggage. Like the inspected by #42 tags you get in your clothes instead of some vague "we went through your bag" note.

Unfortunately there are bad apples in everyone's bunch. The TSA was formed so quickly, and the screeners were hired so quickly, there was bound to be problems. Thankfully you hear about less and less instances, so they appear to be weeding the bad ones out.
