craftkook Posted January 8, 2010 #1 Share Posted January 8, 2010 How much do you tip taxi drivers? We never use taxis here so have no idea. Thanks
Name Of The Game Posted January 8, 2010 #2 Share Posted January 8, 2010 I think the fare to/from Carlos & Charlie's Beach was $13.00 and we gave the driver $15.00.
arlodog Posted January 9, 2010 #3 Share Posted January 9, 2010 We usually tip 15% of the negotiated fare. Make sure you verify the fare before you get into the taxi. Some of the drivers don't always follow the guidelines for the fares which are supposed to be pre-set. There will be signs posted at the pier with the fares to various locations around the island. bruce-r Posted January 9, 2010 #4 Share Posted January 9, 2010 Unless the driver does something extra or goes out of his way to render service, I do not tip taxis in Cozumel.
Magic City Cruiser Posted January 9, 2010 #5 Share Posted January 9, 2010 I've never had a problem with drivers asking more than the preset amount. Of course, I usually ask to confirm. There are some that say tipping isn't necessary but with a van, we usually tip a buck or 2 each, a couple of bucks for 4. So far, they don't act like they are offended when tipped. I appreciate their service and don't mind showing my appreciation in a small way.
CMM Posted January 11, 2010 #6 Share Posted January 11, 2010 I read on Travelocity that tipping is not custumary with taxis in Mexico so on our recent cruise we just paid the fare. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g150768-s606/Mexico:Tipping.And.Etiquette.html TAXI DRIVERS "The taxi union in parts of Mexico is very strong and, as a result, they have a monopoly on the local tourist transportation industry. The rates charged are very high and the tip is usually built in. A ride of as few as ten blocks will cost you a minimum of $6.00 U.S. As a result, people do not normally tip taxi drivers. However, if a taxi driver provides extra service, e.g., loading/unloading your bags or groceries, wating for you while you shop, etc., then a tip is warranted for the extra effort." However, a taxi ride from the pier to Paradise Beach is about 15-20 minutes. The taxi fee is around $12. That's $36 in an hour if they have a similar fare every 20 minutes. Then, the company pays the driver, licenses, auto maintanance, etc. Doesn't seem high to me :)
