How can you tell if your balcony room is on the port side?

If you are stading on the ship looking forward the left is port and starboard is the right of the ship.

I have no idea how to tell if you will be on the dock side of the ship when it pulls into port. Maybe if you gave us your ship name and ports someone will be able to help.

Then find your deck, on your ship and your cabin. The pointy end of the ship is forward. Port is the left side of the pointy end. This is NOT rocket science!

Does being on port side mean you are on the side that is closest to the dock? Is that a totally silly question?? :)

Not necessarily. Port is left and starboard is right when facing forward. The ship may dock with either side next to the pier or anchor in the bay.
