Worth bringing walkie talkies for VOS?

Hi, we were thinking about bringing walkie talkies for our next vac on VOS but I read somewhere that they dont work on this ship.

Has anyone used them on VOS and not had any problems?

There are 6 of us travelling so it would be nice if we could find each other on such a

large ship.

I saw people using those 2-way radios on board the Carnival Victory last week, and it seemed like a great idea! I'd say go for it, unless someone tells you they really won't work.

I've seen them used on other ships but I heard that they dont' work on the Voyager.

Anyone tried to use them on the VOS?

I can't see why they would work on one ship and not another. We used walkie talkies on the Explorer last year, they worked just fine.

We used them on our VOS cruise last year and they worked just fine (when the kids had them turned on and with them!). They were also great on shore excursion when it was really easy to get separated like in the shopping area in Cozumel.

There were 10 of us on the VOS in Nov. They worked great. Make sure to get the ones with sub-chanels. YOu need them or you will be sharing your chanel with too many others.

We used them on Navigator and we ended up hearing someone else on a ship's crew, maybe even Navigator's. Even with all the sub channels that our radio gad.. 24 channels with 14 sub channels also, we still at one point or another had some problems.

 

Also, they don't work all that great if say you are on the pool deck and the other person is in studio B.

I would recommend Motorola. There are several different classes, the "base" ones advertise up to 2 mile range - this would be under perfect conditions, not on a ship. The newer class advertises up to a 5 mile range. The difference is that the latter has a higher signal output as measured in watts. We have two of each type, and they can all communicate with each other. The "5 mile" set does have a better and stronger signal. We have used the other ones on the Majesty, but plan to take both sets on the Mariner next month. If you use Ebay, you can get a really good deal on them - I got our newer set for less than $40 including shipping. Hope this helps.

The 5 mile type are the only ones that will work reliably and even they have dead spots. To be considerate of other passengers turn off the chirp and call signal, get the vibrate type and use them discretely. If any kids along do not let them use them as a toy.

I read on another post somewhere that the 5 mile range units do work better, and some of these models also have a vibrate feature (so as not to annoy your neighbors).

Problem is they are not yet available in Canada (I was told they are not DOC approved for use here).

Too bad. But since we are driving to our US port, maybe we will look for some enroute.

The model I currently is just a Motorola cheap set. (should be fine off the boat).
