Secret87 Posted January 23, 2010 #1 Share Posted January 23, 2010 Four of us will be traveling the end of February on the Valor. We are interested in taking Laptop/Netbook on cruise and would like to be able to use Skype Video and/or Voice to reach family while cruising. Would be interested to know if anyone has used this on a cruise? How well or how poorly does it work? Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks, Secret87
greenboi Posted January 23, 2010 #2 Share Posted January 23, 2010 I have heard that the bandwith isn't good enough for most of these VOIP. I brought my magic jack to try it on my last cruise, but the connection was so terrible, I had issues with just updating my facebook with pictures. I would also think the ship would block some of these ports to prevent the drain on the ships bandwith by a few cruiser's applications. I have never tried it, but my experience is the there isn't enough bandwidth for basic applications much less what my magic jack likes at home. Hope to hear from someone who has had success. karrie Posted January 23, 2010 #4 Share Posted January 23, 2010 Hi,I went with friends on the Valor last October. They used Skype several times to communicate home to their kids. It worked pretty well. They had to buy minutes from Carnival though for the internet connection. Carol
salty dingo Posted January 24, 2010 #5 Share Posted January 24, 2010 I have had a hard time just downloading email with attachments. Most every post that has asked about VoIP I have ever read has said don't waste your time. The bandwidth is not good. If you have to talk fire up the cell phone, or buy a phone card in port. There's too much fun stuff going on around the ship to worry about fooling with a flaky internet connection.
