We leave in a week and I am still trying to decide what to do in Progreso. If anyone has taken the excursion Dzibilchaltun Mayan Ruins or Dune Buggy Exploration and beach, I would really appreciate your input. Which one is the better excursion for the money? Thank you!!;)

haven't done the Dzibilchaltun Mayan Ruins or Dune Buggy Exploration excursion, but I am certain that the ruins at Dzibilchaltun are quite a bit larger than Xcambo... you can see my pics of xcambo at http://www.oldmedic.smugmug.com it is a good place to see original ruins without spending the whole day on an excursion... we caught a bus from the mercado where the busses from the pier drop off in town. I think it was about 20-25 bucks per person... enjoyed the trip and the sights...

How long was the ride to Xcambo? Did you book on your own or thru the cruise? We'll be in Progreso Mon. 2/22 and I can't decide on what to do! We want to see the ruins but not sure of where to go and how to allow for time! Only our second cruise and still feeling pretty green! Any help would be appreciated! BTW in the med. field too :)

at the time we took the tour, it was offered at the Mercado(actually on the bus on the way to the Mercado)... believe it was $25.00 per person... Carnival now offers it as an excursion for $86 or 88 per person. I believe the tour is offered through auto-progresso, but you would need to check their website to verify that... not sure if it is still offered on a private basis...the ride was about an hour or so to the ruins, with a stop on the side of the road to see the pink flamingos that nest there during the year....i believe there is an additional stop in the Carnival excursion that we did not have.. it is a stop at a small village with refreshments served and possibly a small amount of shopping available there... If you choose the Carnival excursion they will drop you off at the Mercado or take you back to the ship, your choice...

Just got back from a cruise and did the Xcambo (Flamingos) Tour thru Autoprogreso. They have representatives where you get off of the ship or after you get off the bus. The tour was a little over two hours long and cost $19 per person(they do take Visa/Mastercard after you get off the bus at their office). They stop and let you photograph flamingos, which were scarce this time of year, then stop at a salt mine where you can pick up your own samples, then onto Xcambo. Xcambo is small but you are able to still climb the pyramids and is still interesting. Victor our guide and Edgar the driver both did an excellent job. Also I love these people because ten minutes after we got off the bus my wife realized she left the camera on the bus. Another driver phoned back to the shore and our camera was found and returned to us. So if you want to take a short relaxing tour I recommend this one and highly recommend autoprogreso.
