Can someone tell me how far is the cruise ship pier to Philipsburg shopping. How much does it cost to use the taxi (water or land)?

Not far at all - 15-20 minutes or so walk. Water taxi is handy and is about $7 for an all day pass.

 

Take a look at the destination video on the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau site - when you see the cruise ships Philipsburg is to the left just out of the frame. Shopping is all along that area.
