Barbados wildlife reserve

We'll be spending 3 nights in Barbados before boarding our cruise ship and would love to see the green monkeys at the wildlife reserve. I know it's at the north of the island tho, what's the best way to get there? We'll be staying at the Almond Casuarina on Dover Beach in the south but will also have a free shuttle to Bridgetown

Well 1st thing, don't expect anything too special at the wildlife place, more like a petting zoo with imported animals. You should see monkeys there but the best time is late afternoon when they get fed, they are free to go as they please, & they please to go out for the day scrounging stuff! We always have a car so getting there otherwise from the South is difficult, too expensive by cab & would take an age by bus.

this is about 15 mls. from Bridgtown, it's a fairly easy drive if you hire a car and you don't mind getting lost a few times!.

In the same area (same car park) is another forest attraction, Grenade Hall, but paths in here are very steep and slippy, very overgrown, but right at the bottom is a cave with bats in it, at least when we went.

Farley Hall (nice place for a picnic) is also close by, this is the ruined remains of a plantation house where "Island In The Sun" was filmed.

St Nicholas Abbey, another plantation house,(not a ruin, this time) and Morgan Lewis Windmill are also close by and then you can complete your tour by driving south along the east coast to Bathsheba and across country back to BT, about 40 miles all in.

You will have to pay admission at all these and I would advise phoning ahead to confirm opening times and of course you need to make enquiries about cars and licence requirments.

If you are from the UK, they drive on the same side and a UK licence is accepted.

Or you could try to get a group together and book a minibus and driver.

if you are there on a sunday, the national bus service runs a tour.

info here. ( *********************************/barbados/Travel/Transportation/Transport_Buses/)
