Katetx Posted February 4, 2010 #1 Share Posted February 4, 2010 Has anyone bought this premium Rum while in Jamaica? I am wondering how much it costs in Jamaica versus the US. I will be arriving in Montego Bay and am trying to figure out whether to bother with the rum tour. Thanks.
Gathina Posted February 4, 2010 #2 Share Posted February 4, 2010 Don't buy Appleton. You can get it in the states. But the tour itself would be neat! The difference in the price isn't that much if you buy it in Jamaican or US. Get Wray & Nephew Overproof..that is the preferred brand in Jamaica although Appleton is good. Most Jamaicans get overproof and it's hard to find it in the US . It's in a yellow/green bottle. They also make several nice flavored rums you can't get in the US And get Sangster's Rum Cream..THAT you definately can't buy in the USA. It's better than Baileys. bahama-momma Posted February 5, 2010 #4 Share Posted February 5, 2010 I agree with Gathina on the Sangster's Rum Cream - it is definitely better than Bailey's wish I'd gotten more! However, I must disagree with her on the tour of Appleton's. For what we paid and what we got (could have been the person who gave the tour) it wasn't worth it - the whole place seemed to be a bit disorganized (maybe the amount of tours that were coming/going). We were led into the main bldg - told to get a rum punch and then we were left to wonder "what next" they had a film running telling about the factory and as we were watching , someone finally came and said "follow me" - we did some walking, climbing stairs, and made our way back to the main bldg (this probably lasted 15-25 min). Then at the main bldg we were fed and then we could browse the very small gift shop, go thru the liquor store and also get some samples of the Appleton Rum. I think the worse part of the entire trip was the 1 1/2 hr drive there and 1/1/2 hr drive back - I really wish I'd done something other than the tour while in Montego Bay. steffaroonie Posted February 12, 2010 #5 Share Posted February 12, 2010 Here's another ditto on the Sangster's Rum Cream. It is sooooo good, especially the Jamaica Blue Mountain one. We took the Appleton Rum tour and loved it, but were recommended by our guide not to purchase it there because it was more expensive. He was right. I found it at the airport for much less than at Appleton Rums. But do get the Sangster's Rum Cream, you won't be disappointed.
arlodog Posted February 13, 2010 #6 Share Posted February 13, 2010 I don't suggest the overproof rum! Unless you are looking for something like everclear. It is so strong you can't mask the taste. Stay with the cream rums ect...something you can't easily find in the states. Gathina Posted February 14, 2010 #7 Share Posted February 14, 2010 That's why the call it OVERPROOF. It's the way rum is supposed to taste..I love it..and I have rum from 12 countries I've visited and it remains my favorite besides Haitian rum and Brazilian. When you compare rums from other countries, many taste close to Overproof except for Bacardi which to me is hardly rum. MY opinion. The preferrd rum of Jamaica, not appleton. I don't suggest the overproof rum! Unless you are looking for something like everclear. It is so strong you can't mask the taste.
