Is it True ?

Interrogation Room

Much like the other addicts on this board, I have no intention of entering a 12-step program for cruise addiction. Hello, my name is Chief Cruiser, and I'm a cruise addict is as far as it gets. I admit I have a problem. I also admit I am not willing to stop my habit.

I am dealer as well. I've gotten my father, mother, daughters, and even gotten two of my grandchildren, ages 6 and 3 hooked.

I would say I am going to hell for getting so many of my family members hooked, but actually, I'm going to the EASTERN CARIBBEAN instead!!!!!!!

Hooked and will die a cruise addict!!!!!!!!

I'm an addict also and a dealer, got DH hooked after #1. I am addicted for another reason as well. When I price out any other vacation and add in transportation, food, lodging, entertainment, etc., there is no other vacation that can even come close to offering you the bang for the buck that cruising does. DH and I used to alternate Europe every other year with cruising, but now that the Euro is so God awful high, we are doing 2 cruises a year (minimum) and know that there is no way a land vacation can come close in price for the same amount of days. Oh I could do a land vacation for less (staying at Motel 6, eating at McDonalds, etc) but that isn't an apples to apples comparison.

Some friends of mines on facebook told me that cruising can be "addicted".

Once you go on a cruise, you will want to cruise over and over again.

Is this true? My family and I have never cruises before so this will be our first time.

Just got back from Las Vegas where we went at least once a year in addition to other land based vacations all through the 80's & 90's. We started cruising in 2005 and took no land based vacations until our trip to Las Vegas. We stayed in the Venetain and had a lovely suite. We spend the time expressing remorse that we wasted money on a Las vegas vacation when we could have been on a cruise ship. Even the casino on the ship was better. There is nothing like cruising and once you experience it, you will be hooked for life. Just look at the amount of cruises people have listed on their posts.

Honestly, you've come to the wrong site to ask that question :D

Not everyone gets addicted. My parents went with us for their first cruise last summer. They both liked it, they were really into all the activities, but at the end they still (tactfully) said they wouldn't particularly care to go on another one for a while. They really enjoy sightseeing and immersing themselves in the culture of wherever they visit, much more than 12 hours (or shorter) in a port of call allows. They go to Italy every year. So it's not that they don't like to travel. They are both really active people, and I just don't think the cruise was enough for them, even though there are activities happening all the time, but still you are on a ship most of the time, and I think that kind of bothered them (weirdos).

Also I think they were surprised by how much of the cruise involves sales pitches and buying different things. I was a little surprised by this on my first cruise, too.

Also I think they were disappointed that you couldn't see the shore when out at sea. I know that sounds really naive, but I had similar visions of a cruise before I went (after all, that's what the brocures show!). My Dad asked me before we left if I thought we would stay pretty close to the shore for most of the trip and I had to say um, no. In his defense it was a Canada/New England cruise so it kind of made sense.

And while they didn't have any complaints about the food, and they said it was all good, I suspect they found it just kind of average (which, if I'm being honest...but I'm not going to get into that on this board!). They had heard all these stories about unlimited room service, and had some romantic visions of ordering room service and eating on the balcony, and I think they were suprised that the menu was limited. They still ordered every day and said how much they liked it.

I am making them sound very negative, but they didn't complain about any of this, I just knew their expectations ahead of time, and I've known them my whole life so I can read them very well. I just wanted to make the point that cruising it not necessarily for everyone (again - weirdos!!) And I know people who love cruising make everything sound really awesome, and for the most part it all is, but you know how it is when something is very hyped, every detail doesn't always pan out the way you think, and one person's experience, even with a very specific thing, might be different than someone else's.

I should note, however, that when we returned from that cruise my aunt and uncle asked if they would go on an Alaska cruise with them next summer and they said maybe. So maybe they will end up becoming addcited after all...

I am definitely addicted, no hope for me. My husband likes it, but I wouldn't call him addicted. Same for my MIL and FIL, only reverse the genders.

DH and I have been married for over 20+ years and did not travel much together. Not that he didn’t want to vacation, it just didn’t fit into his priorities so I traveled with DD. DH made a comment one day that maybe we should take a cruise; he had heard about cruising from others and though why not try it. I though…ok a vacation…sure, why not.

I did my reading and research and choice the Miracle and have been hooked since. It is one vacation I can suggest and get a response from DH that isn’t a no but more of an ok, let me know what you come up with. Of course it has to fit into his schedule.

I know that there are a lot of cruise lines to choose from but the experience I have had on CCL and the bang for the buck I will continue to cruise CCL.

I have not been on a cruise for a few years and am having withdrawal so I had to book a cruise with DD and sister. Ladies cruise.

Next scheduled one won’t be until late 2011 with DH.

Yes, Yes, it's sad but true. As you can see by my signature, it certainly can be addictive. However, on the positive side, the only side-effects I have noticed are wonderful memories, wonderful friends, and amazing experiences. (I don't consider depleted account balances to be part of the condition) :)

Bon Voyage

Aloha

for the $$$ you can't beat it. Its an introduction to new places. My first cruise was 14 days of wonderful sunshine and wonderful beaches..Barbados, Granada, St. Lucia etc. Since then I've spent a week in Paris, a week in Rome, Florence and Venice...plus wonderful long weekends in Chicago, New Orleans, Washington DC. Trips to Jersey shore, Delaware shore and South Beach, Miami. , made stops at Civil War battlefields and many museum visits around the US. I imagine it can be addictive, but its only part of the picture for me. Staying 2 weeks on Palm Beach in Aruba is quite a wonderful time as well. Cruising is great but its not addicting for everyone. Barb:D

My wife cought me looking at cruises for April 2011, and we haven't gone on our April, 2010 cruise yet!

What does that tell ya?

Like already posted, a cruise is truly the "best bang for the buck"!

Fortunately, there is no cure for the "cruise bug"!:p

OCEAN CRACK. That's what I call it! :D

I just returned from my first cruise less than a month ago. Two friends and I planned and looked forward to it for an entire year...and it was over all too soon. :(

I've tried for 3 weeks to get back into my work routine, but I'm depressed. I finally told DH that we simply have to cruise in December 2010. I haven't booked yet, but I'm only a click away.
