2-laner Posted February 12, 2010 #1 Share Posted February 12, 2010 We will be there on the Conquest from 7 AM - 4 PM, and were trying to decide if a rental car is the way to go. We really want to see areas out from the main traffic like the lighthouse, botanical gardens, places away from the crowds. We were thinking the rental car was the way to go, and prices sound reasonable for the car itself. But, few questions have popped up among us. Since it is a tender port, what is the reasonable time to allow getting off the ship and into a rental car? What are the other costs for the rental, like insurance and temperary lisense I have heard about? How much driving time should we allow and still allow time to get the car back to the company and get us back to the ship? Any help would be wonderful. :)
Kim.cc Posted February 15, 2010 #2 Share Posted February 15, 2010 A few years back we rented a Jeep and drove around the island. It was a lot of fun. The cheapest way to get to Rum Point:-) Try http://aviscayman.com , our jeep was brand new and the top flipped down. The kids loved it
drew sailbum Posted February 15, 2010 #3 Share Posted February 15, 2010 There are several options to provide the insurance cover you need - through the rental agency, credit card perk, or you own auto or umbrella insurance policy. Usually directly through the rental agancy is the most expensive. Temporary license is CI$6 (US$7.50) per driver. For just one day, limit it to one driver. Some companies will quote a total all-in-one rate: rental, insurance, license and maybe even gas. A rental car is the only practical way to take in all the destinations you mentioned. You should be driving against the flow of traffic. Drive time from the Botanic Park back to the airport (where most rental agencies are) is about 40 minutes. Add in some extra time, 20 minutes or so, for them to transfer you back to the tender piers.
