Tour Guide Recommendation for Paris

Would like tour guide recommendation for Paris. We're going on Viking So. France Serenade w/extension in Paris in May. Does anyone have the name of a nice guide in Paris? Thanks.

You don't need a guide for Paris. There are probably more Paris guide sources than any other city. We never found a city easier to get around.

On "Fodors" there has been a lot of talk about a tour guide in Paris that is wonderful. You might try doing a search there.

Have you considered using the "Hop On/Hop Off" bus L'Open Tours? We have used it in several cities and will probably do so in Paris in April if the weather is good. I have looked at the 3 different routes it takes and it goes everywhere. I would think with a 2 day ticket for 32 Eu and a good guide book you could just about see everything in Paris.I like Rick Steve's "Paris" even though I know some can't stand him. There is a ticket that is a little more money,44 Euro, that includes the HO/HO bus and the Batobus that runs back and forth and makes 8 different stops on the Seine from Eiffel Tower to Jardin des Plantes.

Don't waste money on a guide in Paris, heres how to do it yourself . On the first day go to the front of Notre Dame and walk to the left . Double decker round trip (2 hours trip) departs from 10.00am at regular intervals . Buy a two day ticket . Day 1 - ride the bus round the whole circuit to get the overall feel and layout, and to understand who's who at the zoo. (Earphones supplied and commentary in umpteen individually selectable languages). Next day go back get on and off at the sights you want to see, and get on the next bus etc . Do it at your own pace. Paris is one place you do not need a guide. Must sees Musee Dorsay, Tower Eiffel, Champs Elysees, Arche de Triomphe, Notre Dame, Place de Republique, Opera House . The RED circuit bus covers and links them all . Also the Paris Metro is very easy to use and will get you from A to B in no time flat for a pittance . And do dine on Boulevard St Michel a gastronomic delight . Great souvenir shopping on both sides of the Seine in vicinity of Notre Dame. Visiting the Palace at Versailles is easy . RER train to Versailles from stations along the Seine near Tower Eiffel . On arrival at Versailles exit the station turn right, walk one block and turn left and the oppulence will hit you in the face . Chartres and its famous Cathedral is accessible by train from Gare Montparnasse in Paris. Don't waste money on a guide which you can better spend on the delightful sights and food goodies Paris has to offer.

If you want a guide in Paris you might try the web site for the American Church in Paris, as there are a lot of students as well as ex pats who attend this huge church, also check on bullitin board there if you haven't found anyone by the time you arrive. We love to explore on our own and as others have said it is the easiest city to do just that BUT we do some of the walking tours (usually xpats as guides) called PARIS WALKS ( paris-walks.com). These you can simply show up outside designated Metros, pay (3 years ago 10 euro) and become part of the group. Tours usually last 2 hours, rain or shine. You can pick up broshures at many places especially English book stores and at the church. Guides are excellant and many locations and topics! My email is dosnomads@comcast.net if any questions. We love Paris!!!! GMA1:o:cool:
