sights to visit in Helsinki

Recommended Posts

It was recommended that we not miss the Market Hall, but I didn't get information about its location and its hours of operation. Any information as to where it is in relationship to most ship docks? Also, a restaurant was suggested on Mannerheimintie, but they don't remember its name. Only that it has stained glass windows. Any idea about this??

In return, for this information, I share the suggestion to have ice cream in Helsinki. This recommendation was made by close friends who have traveled world wide (often in Italy) and say that Finnish ice cream tops the list...especially vanilla!

Thanks, Phyllis

Helsinki is just a wonderful town to visit. Many great sights and fairly easy to navigate by yourself. We shared a taxi from our crusie dock to Market Square (where Market Hall is), with another couple and cost us about 6 euros each couple. market square is the main part of town, where you can find most anything, from some great food to souvenirs, to just about anything else. From here you can walk to many of the top attractions, catch a boat to the Suomenlinna Island Fortress or just enjoy being in such a lovely city.

Here are a few of my pictures of Helsinki. Hope you enjoy

To all of you!

Thanks for the quick replies and the fantastic photos! I have enjoyed many of your photos on this website of this itinerary. Looks like half of the day can be spent at the Market Hall. Excited about this trip, but have to wait until Aug.

Yes, Market Square is a great place to spend some time. The people are just so friendly, and you can sample some marvelous things to eat. As Market Square is really the hub of central Helsinki, it is the best place to start.

Let me add a video and some other pictures to help you get orientated in this wonderful city

Thanks so much. Len...wonderful photos! Can one walk between the Rock church, Uspenski cathedral, Market Square or is there an easy public tram to get around to the various special sites? Love to walk and enjoy the little surprises, but also want to make sure we get to see the famous attractions as well.

Glad you liked the pictures. When you get back you'll have loads of your own:)

When we were looking for info for our trip last year, some one put on a map of the trams in Helsinki. If memory holds, you need the 3T tram, and that will take you round most of the city of Helsinki. (If I am incorrect, some one will help out here).

From where the ship docks, there is no tram, just a public bus to get you to market Square. You do need ther right amount of change for the bus, and there are no ATM's around, so have some Euros handy. If not, take a taxi, or offer to share a ride with some one. The cost is about 5-6 euros per couple and will get you there a lot quicker.

Most things are right around Market Square. It is just a very short walk to Senate Square and the Lutheran Cathedral, in another direction, another very short walk to the Uspenski Church.

If you want a boat ride somewhere, also right from Market Square and you can catch the 3T tram there also. That's the key, get to Market Square and everything happens off of that.

No real difference between trams 3T and 3B anymore. Earlier they went in different directions but nowadays the trams will change number from 3T to 3B and back on each "8" lap. The difference between 3B and 3T is now only significant on the stop in front of the railway station where the two circles of the "8" meet.

There was a tourist leaflet on the Net earlier but cannot find it anymore.

Anyway, here are the rout maps.

If you prefer to walk its an easy nice promenade between the Rock church and Uspenski cathedral/ Market Square straight through downtown.
