But I would rather be smelly and amusing than fragrant and boring.:D

Well, I've managed to get all the way to ?2 years of age being smelly and boring so there must be something to be said for it!

Well...I really don't know what to think..we have an evening routine that is obviously over. We go to the casino bar for a before dinner cigarette and cocktail. And again after dinner. Without the cigarette, don't need the cocktail either. After that it's the casino. We don't go to the shows and we don't go on a trip to sit and relax. We can do that at home.

Soooooo, now there is absolutely no place on the ship to enjoy a cocktail and cigarette in the evening. Churchills doesn't count because it's a cigar lounge and not exactly night life. Sitting in the cabin for a cocktail and cigarette all dressed up sounds pitiful. :o

I just don't understand. Smoking was so limited before, why couldn't they just keep the compromise.

They allowed 5 tables for smoking in the pub which was standing room only while the rest of the pub sat empty. To make matters worse, "anti smokers" sometimes used those tables. As far as deck smoking, there are 6 tables of which 1 or 2 were usually occupied by non smokers. Supposedly one side of the back deck was smoking also but it never was. I also don't think it's a fair option to expect people to sit out there at night on a TA all dressed up no matter what the non smokers think.

I have to agree with two of you, I met the most fun people in the smoking areas sharing tables and just having a good time....casino bar also. As far as the rest of the ship, never met anyone.....with the exception of super nice dinner companions.

I'm truly rethinking our upcoming 26 day voyage. I think that's an awfully long time to be made to feel so unwanted. Talk about missing the comforts of home. I've got 4 slot machines and an ashtray. :D

Do we now get to discuss the evils of having a bottle of liquor in the cabin. Are we also expected to buy a drink in the bar and carry it around the ship to the cabin.

I don't mean for any of this to sound arrogant or rude. I'm just sitting here close to tears at the thought of this trip, that I was so looking forward to, turned into a not so enjoyable ship life experience.

I confirm that everything Jimmy has said is correct. This is because he is too tight-fisted to buy 'Sir Martin's Elixir of Youth (stops smells and makes you really interesting)', available from all good and not-so-good chemists.

Well, to put it in simplistic terms, single issue pressure groups of the kind that is pursuing the anti smoking agenda, will not countenance compromise. The word is not in their dictionary - only total victory will suffice. And rest assured, as others on this thread have said already, they will not stop once total victory over smoking has been achieved. They will seek another "cause". Control freakery recognises no boundaries, it knows no limits, it is without borders - there is no area of your life in which the control freaks will not interfere.

And, make no mistake about it, iin the United Kingdom, in the United States of America, and in most of Western Europe we are rapidly ceding every vestige, every scintilla of freedom that we once possessed to the control freak tendency. I dread to think what the situation will be like in 20 or 30 years time, but every single day I thank heavens that my remaining time on this planet is limited and that I will not be around to see it.

While I do feel for you, Cunard are following what the most people want and thats no smoking, it is also a goverment issue, In the UK as in many USA places Smoking is banned inside places like the work place and resturants, I am surpised that this has taken cunard so long to sort out.

I am sure that you will find people who dont smoke as much fun as those who do smoke, give it a try, why do you feel that you cant face a 26 day voyage without a cigerette, I managed a 21 day voyage without one and we found many great people who were fun, great fun, .you can smoke in the cabin, balcony, churchills and on deck-thats quite a few places-you need a cigerette to have a dring, place a bet or have fun, I promise you, you just dont.

i do hope it doesnt spoil your trip however and im sure if you love the ship so much then you will be on it, no matter what.

I also dont think Cunard will worry about lost revenue in the casino, people wont stop gambling, if they want to camble , they will, im Cunard have looked into this fully and not taken this step lighty, also there are many people who will book a voyage because the smoking is now very limited, so the revenue increses, and if Cunard feel the need to increase fares due to the ban, so be it, its only money, I for one will still be booking.

Again, I do hope it doesnt spoil your voyages too much

Because they listened to a small but vociferous group of anti (as opposed to non) smokers. This started a few years ago with the non-smokers asking for one bar which banned smoking (fair enough) and has, like everything else in life, now gone from one extreme to another. Perhaps they may have a re-think once their revenue goes down.

If it were a requirement under UK law that applied to ships, then it would have been brought in years ago, when the UK law was brought in.

As it was not, we can assume that the UK law does not apply to a ship on the high seas, at least in this limited context.

No doubt if you disagree you will provide the appropriate statutory authority.

Don't you mean from "not-so-good chemists and really-truly-awful chemists"?

And, while we are on the subject, I am not tight fisted. For a Scotsman I am open handed, sharing, generous, warm, and giving.

I've promised my family that if I win the £40million on the Euro lottery tonight I will, without the slightest hesitation and without question or compromise, give each and every one of them the sum of £10 each to do with exactly as they please!

Yes, I remember it well. That's when they realized the POWER. I truly don't believe there will be revenue loss. As was said, there are plenty to take the place of smokers. I do remember though on our first QM2 Christmas cruise there was no smoking allowed at the casino bar and it was empty full time without exception. On our TA, they allowed smoking at the bar and it was hard to get a seat. Of course they only have about 8 stools. I think it would make way more sense to ban smoking in the actual casino because that's such close quarters anyway and allow smoking at the bar. But no one asked me.

Yes, I realize the world has gone non smoking but I still believe there should be a little more compromise because no one utilizes every room on the ship and just because they think they might in the far off future doesn't mean it needs to be ready for them now. :D:D:D

I really agree with you, particularly in the fact that a good many of Cunard's passengers are older, repeat cruisers. There should be some compromise , if not for any other reason but to reward their passenger's loyalty to the line.

I guess it was a rhetorical question because, yes, I do know all of that. I think that's exactly why this has me in such a sad state. My favorite ship of all time is now not so perfect for me. I'll get over it as I've gotten over everything else but just once I want to HAVE IT CHANGED TO MY WAY. :D

You are not coming over as being arrogant or rude here. I can understand your concerns, but would honestly not become upset about it at all.

You will find other places on board that you can enjoy a smoke, please don't allow the anti smoking brigade on here to upset you...if the truth be known and admitted, a lot of them have in the past indulged.

We as smokers are all placed in the same pot....inconsiderate, which is most unfair as the vast majority of us are very considerate smokers.

Look forward to your voyage and enjoy.

I dony think I have met an inconsiderate smoker, in fact most are considerate, that is NOT the issue here, what has happen ed is that Cunard is following a law and and what the majority of it passengers want nothing less than that.

It is only a smoking ban and you can still find many places to smoke anyway, so what is the problem, you can still enjoy the voayge, I dont think one single smoker on the forum will cancel there booking or stop booking new ones, they will just find the right place to smoke.

Its a rule and a fair rule, the ship has not stopped smokers, just moved tem from the public rooms

Thank you, you are correct of course. I just watched PM's slide show once again and there is no way I'm going deprive myself of that wonderful experience or let this take away from it. The best revenge is "Living Well" and I'll have mine. On the bright side, I believe I will be saving quite a bit of money in the casino and getting more sleep. Usually I can look on the bright side a little faster than this. :)
