Bannister Island - on own is this safe - any suggestions?

Hi, We are sailing on the Carnival Valor in July. Some of our family are doing the catamaran snorkle to turneffe beach but we just want a beach day and that excursion is too expensive. I have read many reports where people said they felt Belize was unsafe and you should stick with a cruise ship excursion but they do not offer any Beach breaks. From reading the boards Bannister Island sounds glorious and we would like to go instead of staying on the ship. I would love to hear from anyone who has done this on their own - all comments welcome good or bad.

Thanks!

I'm not sure you can do this on your own. All we saw was boats of people being brought in from excursions. Nothing like water taxi's that could take you there personally. Maybe someone else will chime in with other experiences. And, yes, you are right it was glorious...and as always we didn't have enough time there.
