Solution to QM2 smoking arguments

As well as the normal dread-thirft, there appears to have been a subtle shift in the "ownership" of this thread. Perhaps it would be nice to hear, once again, from the OP who doesn't seem to have contributed anything after post number 5.

LOL

Eventually, once they had acquired a patina of nicotine, they would be vastly improved.

Sir Martin

A thick, uniform patina of black paint would improve most of them!

I don't suppose there's any chance that they are supplied by ArtiMarti (Fine Art For the Discerning Cunard Passenger), Picasso House, Glacier View, Norwich is there?

I do hope you dont feel that way, we are only chatting, but you have to see it from a non smaokers side.

Why would I want to walk thgough to the casino to inhale smoke either, there has to something that makes you want/need to do this, climb builds and walk to far off places.

I dont smoke, I dont walk up hotels floors to set fire to paper sticks and stand and inhale it, so I dont understand why anyone would

if I did I would be sick, I would harm my lungs and annoy people around me, we some not all.

thats what the thread was about in the first place, so where can we find a bar for smokers

Not that simple. Smokers are smokers. I'm truly interested to see the bottom line for Curnard. The casino and the casino bar are popular areas for smokers. So is the Pub which limited their smoking area to just a few tables while the rest of the room was basically empty. I mentioned this to the bartender and he said to fill out the comment card because that's the only way to get heard and the smokers never do it. I truly feel that the non smokers are more vocal and the smokers just retreat to whatever a cruiseline dictates. Not a problem. We are booked for a 26 day voyage on the QM2. in August. If we can't find a comfort zone to have a cocktail in, a nice enviorment and somewhere close by to have a cigarette we will simply move on. Cunard won't miss us.

No. The argument has to be seen from BOTH sides by BOTH sides. Otherwise there will be no discussion.

You are beginning to pull this around to taking an anti-smoking position. Your words admit of no other interpretation.

I do you the courtesy of assuming that you mean what you say. Please correct me if you do not.

I do kind of get the feeling though that if Cunard 'created' a room/bar area away from the 'general non-smoking' public that eventually those that didn't smoke would also be asking that this be changed to non-smoking so that they too could enjoy the wonderful atmosphere of another part of the ship.

Did I tell you that smokers are some of the most sociable people around?! ;)

Seriously though, a small majority of people on cruise ships are smokers. Just one bar - which is out of the way - would go a long way to those that choose to smoke the devil weed.

There is/was actually a small section of the bar in the Queens Grill Lounge that is a smoking area. Funny thing was when using the bar, I hadn't realised that it was a smoking area as the airconditioning in that room is excellent - and there were a few smokers in there. Maybe this is because the QG Lounge is enclosed? whereas the casino and the Golden Lion are open areas without doors - hence the smell of smoke can drift.

I have to ask why anyone would have to travel up so many floors or to lean out of a window just inhale smoke from a lighted piece of paper and in turn damage there lungs..

Why? Because it's an addiction.

I smoked for 25 years and during that time, before going anywhere, I always ensured first that it was possible to smoke there or nearby - or I wouldn't go!!! Cruiseships used to have smoking sections everywhere including Dining Rooms - it was the 'Non-smoking' areas that were limited and usually where no one else wanted to go!!!

I stopped smoking 8 years ago and it is only since then that I fully appreciate how nasty my smoking might sometimes have been for others. Times change (usually for the better - debate that if you like) and the perception of cigarette smoking has fundamentally changed from being the norm only 30 years ago to being less and less acceptable socially today, as well as being recognised as a major health hazard to the smoker and the passive smoker.

A good old fashioned smoking lounge is a great idea but how do you overcome the problem of bar staff and passive smoking - which is the main reason for the ongoing introduction of smoking bans around the world? Better ventilation is suggested as a solution, but although it can reduce the 'smell' from a smoking area there is not a ventilation system in the world that can remove cigarette smoke before it can be inhaled by a nearby 'passive smoker'.

Can't get page 13 a bit strange, but the lis shows 13 pages.

Ah well, this has been a very good read, a bit spicy in places but on the whole very well debated subject. My 2p, if the extrac system in any room on board ship is adequate, smokers should not cause too much of a problem. When the smoking was allowed in the pub, we sat in the larger part of the room and could not smell anything, so obviously the system was working well. If you have the wintergardens as the smoking room, where will the art auction move, and don't all say off the ship :)

Imagine being stuck in the middle of the Wintergarden and being surrounded by them.

Having to endure their whims and indulgencies.

You could probably taste it in the atmosphere.

Then, yet another dips one into their pocket and produces another handful of the things. You sit cringing, awaiting the next and worst bit.

Here we go again.

Then it happens.

They bid.

So actually smoking there is not so bad (with the roof open).

Best suggestion yet! I find the art much more objectionable than the smokers! To even call the junk that is sold art is an assault on and insult to true artists.

There are cards to indicate to the auctioneer that you are particularly interested in something. They will then take it up to the auction.

It would, of course, be tragic if all the larger pieces attracted one of these card from a prankster.

Or indeed every piece.

Obviously I am not suggesting that anyone is that naughty. Okay?

But, if the roof were open, the rain might come in and damage all the lovely paintings!

...ummm, yes, I see what you mean!

J

I really hate being pedantic, but should it not read "the roof was open" ?

However, I do take exception to "lovely paintings"

Just between you and me, I paint them. So many mugs, so little time.
