There are planes landing and taking off all day, every few minutes or so. The majority of them are the small inter-island planes. Most of the larger planes, coming from the US or Europe, arrive between noon and 3pm.

We got there around noon -caught a big jet- could see in cockpit windows, and then smaller ones are fun as they sometimes tend to go verrry close to fencing. We got an umbrella and two chairs and found ourselves only using it to sit and wait for planes.

Don't set up any items in middle of beach lined up with runway- the sand is like exfoliating! There used to be Sunset Beach Bar there- not sure if they are back up and running since hurricaine and big nearby hotel wanting the property.

Be sure to allow plenty of return time via taxi- it got quite busy on way back (we chose 2:15pm). In fact, it was faster to get dropped off in town and take water taxi back that we already had wrist bands for.

Sunset Beach Bar is still there and they have a website with the plane schedule - http://www.sunsetbeachbar.com. There are also links to some great videos. We're staying in St Martin next month and plan to go back to the beach bar for our third time. It's a great place to sit, have food and drinks and listen to the airport radio with the incoming and outgoing flights.

Sorry, but the SunSet Beach Bar only exists on the internet. From the site you posted: "the real Sunset Bar continues its existence only in cyberspace".

However, at the very same location is now the Sunset Bar & Grill - most won't be able to tell the difference.

The Sunset Bar and Grill is a great place to watch the planes. They have expanded and it's fairly large now with lots of seating with good views. They have a fairly large menu also. Agreed that there are planes taking off and landing all day. The big ones are the most fun of course.

We will be spending a day in St. Maarten next month and being air crew, I am really interested in going to Maho Beach. What is the best way to get there from the port or from downtown even..

Appreciate any feedback!

When we were there, we walked thru short shopping area in port, turned right if I recall, and there was a taxi stand with prices on the board. I recall it being 30-40 min but that was with a detour to drop others off. Cab driver literally stopped in traffic, asked what time to pick up and we would pay fare later. He came by early (beeping-as it was starting to rain) and we ran into taxi as he was again holding up traffic. You will get lots of intermittent stops when they chat a bit, and lots of horn tooting- that is there way of saying hi to people they know. Far cry from our use of horns.

When you get to taxi loading area, ask before you get in, if they are going direct--we had a detour on the way, or ask if large van are you waiting for it to fill? Not sure if rates are standard if pick up in Phillipsburg downtown (via water taxi). We did learn from our driver he "rents" the cab and has to pay a weekly taxi license fee which is way high. Said fares he makes barely covers it 50%, they also must pay for the kids to go to school. We tipped him generously for tour, informative trip and coming back early when it started raining. Due to traffic, we had him drop us in Phillipsburg, had a bit of shopping time as we knew water taxi would get us to pier- no traffic there!
