janice4559 Posted April 4, 2010 #8 Share Posted April 4, 2010 I was told by an NCL rep that if you get through to the upsell fairy, you will be "blackballed" and never get a call for an upsell. Well, I guess if you believe in fairies, you'll believe that story too! Read all the posts - those that I've read where they call for an upsell, they generally get them. Other posts talk about having gotten them more than once by calling. I really don't get the general disposition on this board against calling. It can't hurt a thing to try. If you are polite, professional and don't call twenty times starting six months from sailing, no damage will be done. I know some get tired of me saying this but THERE IS NO FAIRY. This is a business process that NCL puts in place to maximize their revenue. If you call and are in need of what they have and have what they need you will be offered an upsell. Each ship is assigned a "reassignment" specialist whose only job is to execute their upsell business model every day.

Each ship is assigned a "reassignment" specialist whose only job is to execute their upsell business model every day. Sadly, that is what happened a few years ago. There was quite a bit of urging from members here to "keep calling until they give in and offer you an upsell." Also many would book cabins far below what they really wanted and then start in with daily calls to the small upsell department, often beginning months before their cruise date. The department was overwhelmed and couldn't handle the volume. Plus, the revenue department wasn't thrilled with the number of passengers booking super low and then wanting/expecting to move up at a fraction of the fare. So, for more than a year, the upsell department did not accept any incoming calls and had a motto of "don't call us; we might call you; if you call us constantly and pester, we might put you on our 'do not call' list." Now that things seem to have calmed down and perhaps people have learned a valuable lesson, the department is more willing to accept reasonable incoming calls. beachchick

Each ship is assigned a "reassignment" specialist whose only job is to execute their upsell business model every day. Let's see, how many inaccuracies are contained in this post? 1. It has been my experience that if you call them they basically say "don't call us we'll call you". Yes, there are a few proponents to the myth of calling an getting exactly what you want. To debunk this I would have to list all of the other inaccuracies that are prepetuated here by somewhat questionable posters. 2. Each ship is not assigned a "reassignment" specialist. There is a small reassignment group that handles the whole NCL fleet. 3. "If you call and are in need of what they have and have what they need you will be offered an upsell." is the one that really bugs me. If you call you will get voice messaging and will rarely get a call back. 4. Calling it an "upsell business model" is really reaching. The idea is to fill the ship, period. To say that they have a specific business model revolving around upsells is delusional at best. Upselling is a very small portion of the "fill the ship" business model. Now let the typical proponents come out of the woodwork and tell me I am full of it because they get their upsells on demand, and you can decide who has the most credibility for yourself. I know from what I speak. I have received upsell calls in the past with incredibly offers. I have also called to inquire about upsells and have been told "don't call us, we'll call you". And in recent history have called and been connected to voice mail and have never received a return call. There are also others that will swear that NCL uses this "upsell" thing to hook newbie cruisers into the "Suite Life" aboard NCL ships. There may be some truth to this but there is evidence that some longtime NCL cruisers still receive the rare "Upsell Fairy" call. PE

Those of us who have been visited by the Upsell Fairy know the truth. She does, too, exist! :D :D You just keep on telling everyone to call, and pretty soon the Reassignment Desk will become innundated with calls, and they'll cut of incoming calls once again. To those of us who believe that good things come to those who wait, we'll just sit and be so surprised when we get the Good Fairy's call. As for inundating the reassignment desk to the point of having incoming calls cut off - ok, so where's the risk? If it happens, no one will be able to call for upsells. If your position is to not call because you don't want that to happen, you are no worse off to call. I'd rather live my life taking charge of my destiny than to sit and wait for good things to happen. I tell my children to go after those things in life that they dream about rather than wait to get lucky. The only reason I made the spellchecker remark was because that poster attacked my post with "Let's see, how many inaccuracies are contained in this post?" mpk218 Posted April 5, 2010 #14 Share Posted April 5, 2010 And now for something completely different. Heres something I found interesting. The last time I was booking a cruise I got a call from a PCC and we discussed my needs( I always book with a TA ). As we were talking she mentioned that I had never received an up sell in all these years ( she new the number of NCL cruises we had taken ) and how unusual that was. So it seems that information must have been on her screen. I found that odd ..;)

Planer's Edge Posted April 5, 2010 #16 Share Posted April 5, 2010 The only reason I made the spellchecker remark was because that poster attacked my post with "Let's see, how many inaccuracies are contained in this post?" A very rude posting from someone with over 5,000 posts on this board. I don't mind playing nice if others do as well. ...and I followed it up by pointing out the inaccuracies. You then proceeded to say I called you a liar and said I should spell/grammar check. Your infraction was against CC rules and mine was not. If misinformation (or lies as you say) are not questioned then future newbies read these things and are misinformed thus causing problems on their cruise. Just curious, what does my post count have to do with anything. I would think my join date would more of a point than post count. I know people who have been here a few years that have 3 times my post count. I have a number of cruises with the vast majority of them being on NCL so I think I may know what I am talking about. PE P.S. I just noticed a few posts related to this exchange have disappeared so the continuity will probably be lost. Suffice it to say I will stand by what I wrote above in my initial comments to you.

Don Haynes Posted April 5, 2010 #18 Share Posted April 5, 2010 I always book guarantee the cabin I am willing to pay for, and accept any free upgrade offered. On my last cruise I booked the lowest balcony cabin guarantee and ended up in a free upgrade mini suite. On other voyages I have book the cheapest oceanview and have ended up in a free upgrade balcony. So far I have not heard from the upsell fairy, but I wouldn't pay more anyway. People talk about nickel and dime tactics of NCL, yet expect NCL to switch and bait with suite upsells. While its nice for the upsell fairy to call you, in my mind its inappropriate and greedy to call the upsell department... Especially for those who book an inside cabin and then hound the upsell department with several calls daily over a period of months to get a suite for a lower price. That is my two cents on the matter....

janice4559 Posted April 5, 2010 #20 Share Posted April 5, 2010 Let's see' date=' how many inaccuracies are contained in this post?[/color'] 1. To debunk this I would have to list all of the other inaccuracies that are prepetuated here by somewhat questionable posters. So you are basically saying that those that have posted on CC that they have called and received upsells are not telling the truth! 2. Each ship is not assigned a "reassignment" specialist. There is a small reassignment group that handles the whole NCL fleet. When I called the upsell department recently, they told me that they have a person assigned to each ship whose only job is to upsell. That's my experience, not yours. 3. "If you call and are in need of what they have and have what they need you will be offered an upsell." is the one that really bugs me. If you call you will get voice messaging and will rarely get a call back. When I called, I did not get a voice message but rather a real, live person. That's my experience, not yours. 4. Calling it an "upsell business model" is really reaching. The idea is to fill the ship, period. To say that they have a specific business model revolving around upsells is delusional at best. Upselling is a very small portion of the "fill the ship" business model. I never said that their business model revolved around upsells, I merely stated that upselling was a business process that supported their overall business model. There may be some truth to this but there is evidence that some longtime NCL cruisers still receive the rare "Upsell Fairy" call. PE We all have different experiences when it comes to cruising and cruiselines. How many times do you read a review of the very same sailing with one person talking about how good the food and service was and another about how terrible it was? You have your experience with NCL and upsells and I and others have different ones. This does not make one accurate and one not - just different. No matter what you say and how you say it, this post insulted me.
