Day at the Beach....any resorts allow one day passes

I wish the Caribe Hilton would offer day passes. One of the best beaches nearby, but it is the only private beach in the island.

it is not private, it simply has no easy access from the street due to the way the hotel was constructed in the 60's, it was the first major hotel in san juan and the first for hilton international.

We've gotten day passes at the Caribe Hilton on two occasions. We had to call ahead the day that we wanted them to check availability. They actually issue you a room for the day and full access to the property.

It is only for the use of their guests, so "private" might be a technicality, but no one else can use it. I have seen local people being told to leave as they go in from the Escambron side.

I think I saw this same information elsewhere but here is an excerpt from puertoricodaytrips that seems consistent with my memory.

Public vs Private Beaches

All beaches in Puerto Rico are public (at least up to the high-tide mark), unless the beach is man-made (such as the beach at the Caribe Hilton in San Juan). That means that if you want to visit the beach at the Wyndham Rio Mar (for example), even if you’re not a guest at the resort, you’re allowed to.

Resorts, hotels and other establishments on seemingly private beaches have to provide beach access to "their" beaches. Having said that, no one says that they have to provide easy beach access.

So, though you have the right to use a public beach at a resort or hotel, the beach access they provide will most likely not be through the hotel lobby. Often, there will be a footpath outside that leads around the hotel to the beach.

that information is correct, regarding the caribe hilton there was a controversy. the controversy has died down but it was in full steam during the 70s when activists used to do sit ins at this 'beach' and walks thru the hotel to reach the area. there was also a big controversy a couple of years ago about some new condos that were built next to the small fort that is next to the hotel, they had to change the construction plans to make sure free and complete access from one of the streets.
