St. Peter's on Sunday

I know the Vatican museums are closed on Sunday, but the Basilica is open as are the gottoes. Will I encounter a long line on a Sunday? My understanding is that it is free therefore no tickets are required which means you would just have to wait your turn. I have limited time in Rome pre cruise, but I have been there before. I just love the Basilica but don't want to waste too much time on line.

My suggestion is to be in St. Peter's square early morning ( let say 09:00 a.m. ) and you won't encounter any lines. At noon the Popo will lean out from his room.

I don't know when the OP will be there, but the Pope spends the hot months at his summer residence instead of at the Vatican.
