cruisingallover Posted April 19, 2010 #1 Share Posted April 19, 2010 Could we do justice if we do both in one day by train? Which would you do first and why? We would prefer to just do transfer to train station and then take the train rather than do transfer, train ,then hop on a another bus
cruisingallover Posted April 19, 2010 Author #2 Share Posted April 19, 2010 Also, is there a nice winery along the way that we can stop and buy some wine?
euro cruiser Posted April 19, 2010 #3 Share Posted April 19, 2010 Is your port Livorno or La Spezia? You will not find a winery at a train station - best bet is an enoteca in town.
cruisingallover Posted April 19, 2010 Author #4 Share Posted April 19, 2010 Livorno sorry :o We do not want to go as far as La Spezia because I would want to than visit Cinque Terre. This will be saved for another trip.
euro cruiser Posted April 19, 2010 #5 Share Posted April 19, 2010 Well, it can certainly be done time-wise, but you'd be shortchanging both. Viareggio is a beach town ... is your reason for heading there to get some beach time? (That would impact my suggestion re how to order the day) Just for planning purposes, you can assume train times as follows: Between Livorno Centrale and Viareggio: half hour Between Viareggio and Lucca: half hour Between Livorno Centrale and Lucca: one hour
cruisingallover Posted April 19, 2010 Author #6 Share Posted April 19, 2010 Will there be enough to see in Lucca? Is this town easily done on foot?
euro cruiser Posted April 20, 2010 #7 Share Posted April 20, 2010 You can see a great deal of Lucca in one day, but you won't be able to do it all. It's completely flat, and so is easy to do on foot. You enter through the walls just across from the train station. If it's a nice day and not too hot, it's fun to rent bicycles and ride along the top of the walls. I'm guessing if you thought both in a day was shortchanging them, then adding Pisa would be over the top, but, isn't Pisa on the way back from either Lucca or Viareggio to Livorno? My thought would be like the OP to do it by train. I was thinking Pisa last since if it gets late we could skip it. Is that correct from the standpoint that Pisa's on the way back? Thanks.
