I have been lurking ever since booking 3 night criuse on the virgo (not sailing 'till September !!!!! :()

This forum is sooooooo helpful...Thank you to all!

Soooo excited...Hubby and I haven't cruised before and were last in Singapore about 18 years ago!

Have booked 2 days either side in Singapore and so looking forward to it...only 4 months to wait

Have booked an outside cabin with window...is there any way of finding out where the cabin is likely to be ie. which deck?

Does one have to dress up for all evening meals ?

Thanks muchly

If you have your cabin number you can find where your cabin is located on the Star Cruises web site. The cabin numbers are displayed on each deck plan. Click on a deck plan to enlarge the image. The following link will get you straight there.

:DYou must be towards the front. I'm like yourself, I'll be a first timer on the Virgo. I have a cruise on the Virgo coming up in July. I have friends who have been on the Virgo and have learn't a lot from them. It's good that you have a couple of days in Singapore each side of the cruise.

I'm in Perth (and its freezing here at the moment). We are sailing on July 11 (this coming Sunday - Yahooicon7.gif), flying to Singapore on Thursday and spending three days there before the cruise. Pity we aren't going at the same time. Have been on the lookout for someone from Oz on the boat. A lot of people from Perth are sailing on the Sun Princess these days as it leaves and returns from Fremantle. That means less doing the SS Virgo and such. I'll give you the full report when I get back. We are doing 7 nights on the boat.

Awww! Chanel5....we'll miss each other by a week !!!!! I'm travelling Sept 19 !

Hi Maclorr

How many days are you cruising and what ports are you going to?

We have just returned from out 7 day cruise. (Singapore, Penang, Phuket, Singapore, Port Klang (KL), Singapore, Redang Island, Singapore)

It was great.

If you haven't been on the SS Virgo Before the following may assist.

: Money can be changed on the boat no problem. You can give then Aussie dollars or any currency and they will convert that firstly to Singapore dollars and then to either Thai Baht or Malaysian Ringit.

:Each night you will get a program delivered to your cabin"The Star Navigator". This is really helpful and tells you the times and places on the ship where and when everything is on and what you may want to do. Also includes all the next days port of call and optional tours.

: Do yourself a favour and eat in the( inclusive in the cruise price) "Bella Vista" Restaurant on deck 6 for meals whenever possible. This has table service and the food is excellent.

One of the other inclusive restaurants is the "Mediteranean". This is a little more like caffeateria style. Still okay but not in the same class as the other one.

: You don't get a lot of time in the ports. It's all about the Ship. The shows in the

LIDO Lounge were really good. We saw "Rasputin" a couple of times and recommend seeing it if it is still on in September.

" The ships crew were excellent. All really helpful and friendly. Cabins cleaned everyday.

:The main lobby is on deck 7 and anything you want to know they can tell you. That is also where you can book excursions.

: They will take photos when you get on and off the boat in each port and also at the various parties they have (if you want to attend). They are displayed near the picture house and are available for viewing and purchase if you want.

: All cabins have TVs and some of the channel give you info on the ship and the shore excursions. There are 5 internet stations in the Library.

: Just a note regarding when you arrive at Harbourfront in Singapore. You check your luggage in on the ground floor (it is clearly signed you won't miss it).

You then take your passports and cruise vouchers upstairs and line up to exchange them for your Cruise cards. These cards enable you to do everything on the ship, including access to your cabin and paying for anything you want that is not included in the cruise price. You settle the bill on teh last hours of the cruise (by Credit card, cash etc...) You don't need cash on the boat, only when you go ashore. A couple of exceptions may be the casino and the video arcade. Otherwise the boat is virtually cash free.

To much to tell in short time. If you want any other info please ask and I'll do my best to answer. PS there were about 300 Aussie passengers on the Ship (mostly from Perth). I don't imagine you will have any trouble meeting others as most people love a friendly chat.

Cheers

Oh ! Blackvelvet ! meant to ask....where did the ship dock at Phuket?..was it Patong or at their port ?

Hi Maclorr - Unfortunately it docked at Phuket Port so we had to catch a taxi to Patong Beach to do the things we wanted to do. Apparently it only tenders of Patong Beach from about November to March. The rest of the time it docks at Phuket Port. PS Your cabin on Deck 8 should be perfect.

Hi blackvelvet! I see you've been to the Virgo lately. We are also sailing on Virgo this October. I'm wondering about the cellphone connections in the ship. Does the ship charge extra for using its cell site or is it just the ordinary roaming charges we have to pay?

Hi geminitraveller

The Virgo does not have a specific cell site service. If your mobile service provider is linked to worldwide operator such as 'vodafone' or something similar your mobile will have service depending on where the ship is. My mobile service dropped in and out. It had service in all ports and tended to drop out when further out at sea.

All cabins have phones so you can makes calls that way (not sure of the costs). There are 5 internet stations in the library on the top deck that we used frequently for emails, facebook updates etc...

Evenings normal - MEN long trousers and short sleeved shirt and proper shoes. Nothing more casual.

Evenings - Captains Gala Dinner . Collar & tie , long trousers, sports jacket or lounge suit .

Hi Chanel5

As posted by kuldalai, the Bella Vista has a stricter dress code in the evening. In addition to long pants you can have a short sleeve shirt but it must have a collar. The others meals 'Breakfast and lunch' at the Bella Vista are much more casual and shorts and a t-shirt can be worn at those times.

You'll have a great time. Definitely attend th Captains Dinner (and show) as it is a great opportunity to meet others. This is normally held on Tuesday nights. I was only on the cruise 4 weeks ago and miss it already. Take heaps of photos.

There are no irons in the cabins, however you can ask house keeping for one. They don't like you taking your own electrical heating items such as irons with you. They do have a laundry service where you can get laundry and ironing done for you but you have to pay for it.
