Best location for walking impaired passenger?

Hello,

A friend of mine is planning to book a balcony on the 8th deck on the cruise I am on on the Oasis. He has pretty bad neurophy in his feet and has difficulty walking. But, he will not use a wheelchair. He is not a real sun worshipper but plans to join whatever poker tournaments they have in the casino. He will enjoy several of the specialty restaurants as well as the MDR but I don't see him using the buffet very often. I am suggesting that he get a cabin near the aft elevators, because the casino and MDR are aft. My thinking is that he is going to want to be close to "home" when he gets off that elevator, no matter where in the ship he is coming from. Please let me know if you agree, or if I am missing something that will be obvious when we get onboard. (Like, where on the ship do you disembark when in port?) He has never cruised before. Thanks for any input you can give.

It doesn't matter where he is. The theatre is in the front of the ship on the lower decks. This is such a huge ship that he will be doing a lot of walking anyway. Not everything is in the back of the ship. Yes it will be better for him to be near a back of elevators either forward or aft. Everything is spread out.

Thanks. So, he should just stay away from mid-ship. Could you tell me how many exits there are from the ship when arriving at port and where they are located?

My DH also has neuropathy in his feet, so my sympathies are with your friend.

 

Our room location was very close to the front elevator bank on the starboard side. We loved it. No long corridor walks. We were on Deck 11, would generally ride down to Deck 8 (Central Park) and walk through there, or go down to Deck 5 (promenade).

 

On a ship of this size, there is going to be walking involved. DH doesn't use a wheelchair (thankfully he hasn't 'progressed' to that point yet), but he did mention that he'd wished he had brought a cane.

 

I don't know that any particular floor would be better than another--but I would recommend being near the elevators no matter what.

Hi Rachel, Thanks for the advice. I will pass the cane idea along to him. We don't go until Sept 2011. I'm hoping he is in no worse shape by then.

We were close to the aft elevators and found it to be an excellent location for the reasons you have mentioned. There is so much to see on the ship, there can be alot of walking.

I'll tell you that we were right at the elevators/aft in 14668. We walked off the elevator right into the room.
