Kettlecorn favourite popcorn snack

Friday, January 28, 2005

Local entrepreneurs Kevin and Robin Hartmann and Robert and Jeanette Totten have spotted a hole in the take-away snack market in Cayman and decided to fill it with Kettlecorn.

This speciality pop-corn which has traditionally been served at festivals and family gatherings, is cooked in large cast-iron kettles over open fires and seasoned with herbs and spices.

But today it is mostly made in stainless steel machines. Kettlecorn opened just a few weeks ago, with marketing efforts aimed at cruise ship passengers on their way back to the ship. So far, Kettlecorn owners seem to have cornered their market correctly as cruise ship passengers are their biggest customers.

Kettlecorn has a slightly sweet flavour with a hint of salt, it is low-fat, cholesterol free, low in sodium, made mostly of light fluffy popcorn kernels and is a good source of fiber. It has no preservatives, so it keeps its fresh taste if eaten immediately or within 48 hours.

“Kettlecorn is a favourite of everyone from the first time they try it,” said Robin Hartmann. “It is popping up on-island. For your first bag, or a free warm sample, look for the yellow tent with red letters afternoons on the Waterfront. Or pre-order multiple bags for your next family gathering or Super Bowl party.”

A medium size bag of Kettlecorn is $3, while a large bag costs $4.
