For people worried about a smokey cabin

Recommended Posts

OK, this is NOT another thread to debate smoking, and my fondest wish is that it doesn't become one This is a thread to help reassure people who are worried about getting a cabin with a strong smoke smell, and mostly a praise for what a great job Carnival does at getting rid of it. I have been having horrible sinus problems for years, but recently it has gotten to the point that I can barely stand not only smoke but most perfumy scents. I honestly was might have cancelled my cruise if it weren't for the fact that my Mom had booked it for us. One of my biggest fears was a smokey cabin,or that they would try to hide a smokey smell with a perfume that would be worse.

Sure enough, as soon as we opened up our cabin door, the smell of smoke came billowing out. It wasn't just a light wiff, but an overwhelming smell. We spoke to the room Steward (Agnes, who was the best, but I will get to that if I ever get my review posted) who said the last couple in the room literally just sat in there and chain-smoked the whole cruise. She asked us to leave the room for 1/2 an hour and she'd run an Ionizer. 1/2 an hour later we came back and literally couldn't smell the smoke at all. Better yet, it wasn't replaced with another scent. There was literally no scent at all. There also was no scent in the blankets, curtains or couch. She said they'd washed the carpets too, but I didn't feel the need to lay down and sniff there. LOL. Over the week, we would occasionally get a small scent of smoke, but Agnes ran the ionizer every evening, and it never bothered me.

I wish hotels and other venues would be able to use Carnival's standards. I am about as picky about smells as you can get, and I loved walking into my room to smell....nothing. What I really wanted to do was to shove the ionizer in my suitcase and use it to to make my ordinary house smells (like giant stinky dog) disappear.

I have to agree. I found CC after I booked a cruise. I sincerely thought I had booked a non smoking cabin until I read about the smoking policy here. (Ok...ok....I am much better at researching now!!)

I was really concerned because there are three out of our 6 that have asthma! However, we have never had problems in our cabin.

On our last cruise we did cruise with folks who lit up right underneath the no smoking signs in many places on the ship...but it did not ruin our cruise at all!!

If you smell smoke in your cabin, just talk to your steward. :)

sounds like you got a cabin attendant worth her weight in gold. nice to hear they were able to take care of it.

let me borrow the ionizer after you, the back of my car can smell like big wet dog sometimes too :)

Great idea! My car smelling like sweaty boys --at least 4 stinky boys, too! I need to buy one of those things!

You had a GREAT Cabin Stewart! And I agree they do wonders getting rid of smoke smells in the cabins. My Dh smokes but never in the cabin, we try and book a balcony for this reason but if it's not possible he will get up, get dressed and go to the casino if needed. We've only had one problem it was after the Destiny came out of drydock who ever had the cabin for the quick 2 night smoked Cigars in it :( After talking to the cabin stewart he told us cabins on either side and our cabin were all together and they partied hard the entire Cruise. After dinner that night the smell was gone! We forget that they turn the cabins around very quickly and some folks are last second possible out of the cabin and off the ship. The Stewarts have a hard job but do it amazingly as at times it's after 10am when the last person clears out of a cabin but they all have to be by 1pm!

I have been on 12 cruises and never had a smoking smell issue. I have

asthma and smokes really bugs me. So I am picky on where I stay at.

So I stay at Marriott brand hotels because of it. But I am impressed

on the lack of smell in the rooms.

We just ran into this on the Fantasy.

(which was the first time in all these years and all these cruises....so that isn't bad odds)

I am thinking our previous passengers must have smoked cigars in there because Sugeng was right on it with that Ionizer....but had to run it a second time. After that, I emptied a can of Ozium into the carpets, drapes and bed skirt.

After all that, we thought we had it licked...until we went to bed that night.

Every time you turned over in bed...between the mattress and the pillows...the stench would "puff" out in your face.

The next morning I awoke with a violent headache (no ...not a hangover :D ...I only drank water that night) and a sore throat.

So Sugeng replaced all the pillows, duvets, duvet covers, mattress pads and was about to change out the mattress...but I told him to let me hit that with a bottle of Febreeze that I had with me.

That got 95% of the stench out. No more headaches etc. Just a very faint odor (every now and then...not every time) when we sat on the bed.

He earned that $50 bonus!!!

The cabin stewards now have 35 cabins each....so the extra time that they have to put in for something like this puts a stress on their schedules.
