Question for Master Tom re Bergen free-fare city-buses

Recommended Posts

Not wanting to hijack another thread, I'm starting a new one to ask about these.

You stated "If you're in Bergen on a Monday - Friday there's also possible to use the

free-fare city-buses. The buses are in service mon-fri from 07:30 am - 09:00 pm

and depart every 10 min."

Could you please tell me if information about these can be found on line, and, if so, where?

Specifically, I'm wondering

1) are these special buses, or do you just get on any bus without paying a fare?

2) how far out of the city centre do the free-fare buses run or are they just free in the central area?

3) Does the free-fare apply on the bus to Ulriksbanen or to Gamle Bergen?

Thanks in advance for any help/clarification you can provide.

Also, if I may, how far is a light rail stop from the ship dock? I know it will only start running on June 22, but they won't build it in one month!

Luv, not all buses are free, only one or 2 routes. If I remember correctly, one one-way ticket is 23 NOK (senior/child... 12 NOK?)

The free-fare buses are only inside the centre of Bergen and are turning at the Bergen science centre and at Dreggen (Bergenhus Castle)

You can see the line map here at page 2 (Adobe reader is required)

The buses are a little bigger than the ones on the pictures here, but still

smaller then the buses in ordinary service. See if I can manage to take some

pictures of the new ones tomorrow, but it's only those buses that you can

just jump on for a free ride around the city centre :)

To Gamle Bergen and Ulriksbanen are buses in ordinary service (25 NOK)

Master Tom - thanks for the very prompt and helpful reply to my query. I had looked for the info on the bus company website, but hadn't thought to look on the Bergen Commune website.

It looks like we won't be likely to make use of the free buses since the Sentrum area they cover is well within our walking range, and we do like to walk as much as possible - BUT - knowing Bergen's reputation for being rainy, it's great to know the option exists.

Am I correct in assuming that the free buses display a "Sentrum" sign (as shown in the photo in the link you posted?
