Renting a car in skagway

Recommended Posts

We have rented from Avis in Skagway twice. You can do it online or by phone. Both times (different cruise lines) we docked close enough to walk to the Avis office. If anyone in your group is unable to walk a few blocks ( in the case you end up docked at the pier farther away) someone could pick the car up and park it right by the ship.

There is another car rental company there called Sourdough. We've never used them. From what I've read on the Alaska forum, some people have been happy with them, while others complained of getting old, unreliable cars.

We have rented from Avis in Skagway twice. If you check the Alaska board, you will find lots of information about this. It is a beautiful drive!

Here is a shot of Emerald Lake that we took on one trip:

It was late July. We took some baggies with us and found some raspberries growing along the side of the highway:

Enjoy your trip!!

We rented from Avis, too! That's a great thing to do in Skagway. It's a beautiful drive up to Emerald Lake. Be sure and get the guide that you can print off from the Alaska board. We even had fun in the rain!

That is what we did, also. Awesome drive up through the mountains and along the lake. We loved that trip.

When we did this cruise, the "Avis dealership" consisted of a tiny wooden sign and a small counter around three feet long, LOL. We caught the guy on the last day they were open, and he was leaving... for good!

It's a good drive. It parallels the White Pass railway on the other side, so you can see the train and tracks. Use the pulloffs to stop and take pics. Make sure to beat the buses up to Carcross (Caribou Crossing) and you'll get to play with the sled dog puppies before they arrive. Then you can continue up to Emerald Lake, which the buses don't do. You should still get back in town with enough time to go check out the cemetary before dropping off the car.

Last summer we rented a van from Sourdough. We were a bit worried after what we had read on the Alaska board, but our experience was very good. The van (for 5 of us) was clean and fairly new and the price was a lot less than Avis had quoted us. All in all a very positive experience.
