Transportation questions - FLL to Miami

We will be flying into Ft. Lauderdale (late on 3/26) for our Radiance cruise leaving Miami (3/27). What would be the easiest transportation/hotel option for us? Rental car, cab, hotel shuttle? Knowing that this is spring break for many - should we stay in FLL or Miami? Which companies have a car rental drop at the Miami port? What is the cost of a cab? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

We have done this twice. We fly into FLL and rent a car from FLL airport to be dropped off at MIA airport. It's usually about $25.00 to rent a full sized car for 24 hours. The rental car companies all have shuttle buses at the MIA airport to take you to the pier. It's only about 5 miles away.

Returning home, do the opposite. The shuttle buses will be there to pick you up.

It's about the same amount of money as a cab or bus, but you have the car if you want it.

We actually fly in as early as we can the day before so we can enjoy the day there. We also fly out as late as possible after the cruise. We can fit the luggage of 4 people in the trunk of a full sized car, and spend the day hanging out at South Beach. It's so much better than hanging out at the airport for hours and hours.:D

We stayed at the Sheraton at the Fort Lauderdale airport. They have these incredibly comfortable mattresses. We rented a car to drive to Miami. That way we had the car to run to the store, make a couple stops etc. and it was cheaper than a shuttle.

We would love to come in earlier (even a day) but the airline seems to be booked solid going into Florida that weekend. We are using free tickets left over from the "bump" we endured last spring break. A rental car is a definite for the return as we don't fly out of FLL until Monday. However, checking options for the Saturday night as we won't get in until late. Someplace close to the airport would be great.
