Shopping in Messina

Is the centre of Messina walkable? Are there any department stores? We've visited Taormina and Etna several times so we just want to walk to town if it's possible and buy a few things. Any suggestions pls?

The ships dock in Messina right next to town. You get off the ship, cross the street and the town starts. But it is pretty small, and not much their. Lots of small shops mostly souvenirs. There is this large indoor cluster of stores and offices, but not much there. I don't recall a department store. The best thing to do is walk to the square and the famous clock tower. It puts on a show every 15 minutes. You can also walk to the highest point in town and get great photos.

I agree: not really much to see/buy. But it is a good town to just walk around and is relatively compact. Taromine shopping is of course much better.
