Packing Suggestions for Med

Hi All: Just started packing routine for July 23 from Venice to Rome. We are travelling with three "adult" boys, 20, 22, 23. What does "country club casual" actually mean? Their dad wants them to be outfitted with jackets. They prefer dockers/golf shirts, long sleeve shirts for dinners. Who's on the right track? Thanks for any info.

Your boys have it right . . . no jackets needed. You will not see all that many men wearing jackets at dinner.

After 7 trips to the Med we learned to pack "light". You won't use half of what you bring. We even bring older clothes we don't care about and leave them there. No one knows us and you will have much more room in your luggage going home (for all the things you buy). One basic nice outfit is all you'll need. No one will remember what you were wearing. Casual clothes, a light jacket, little jewelry, one purse and limit the shoes. Socks & underware are cheap enough, so you can leave it there (just throw it away). Makes everything much easier. Believe me, we learned!

I love your idea, but I will note that sometimes one *does* remember what others were wearing. We still chuckle about the "Flip Flop Family," a mom, dad and two teens who had no other shoes than rubber flip flops and wore mostly the same hideous sloppy shorts and tank tops every day on our Greek Island cruise.

I get depressed sometimes by how little my fellow US citizens seem to care about how we look when we visit European countries. There is a fine line between doing what is practical and demonstrating contempt for local customs and practices. Just MHO. Sorry for the screed. Like I said, Judy's basic advice is very sage!

Dad's got it wrong.

Go with the dockers and golf shirts.

BUT you REALLY should consider some nice shorts, polos and dare I say it sandals for dining at Tapas on the Terrace - it's such a treat to be able to eat outside, be comfortable and enjoy the med at this time of year (meaning it's HOT).
