bling19572010 Posted July 13, 2010 #1 Share Posted July 13, 2010 We will be in San Juan pre-cruise in December and my parents will be with us. Can you please tell me the name of the pathway that goes around the forts and if it is accessible for someone in a wheelchair? Can a lot been seen from the pathway? Thank you! amapola Posted July 14, 2010 #2 Share Posted July 14, 2010 The path itself starts by the San Juan Gate, which is at the end of Paseo de la Princesa. It's easy to find, as it starts near the pier area, by the Banco Popular building & Federal courthouse. The Paseo is paved in concrete pavers and is mostly smooth and level, no prob for a wheelchair. Once you get to the end of the Paseo, there's a slope up to the SJ Gate (the original entrance to the city), which will be on your right, and a corresponding slope down to the path in front of you. The path is fully paved and smooth, though there is one fairly steep (but short) section about 3/4 of the way in. It's a beautiful walk. You are walking beneath the old walls with the bay to your left, and when you get to the very end (dead end) you are facing the Atlantic, big waves crashing in front of you and the fort above you. I live here, and I never get tired of making the trek out there! As to the wheelchair, if you have someone strong to push it I don't think it will be a problem. Even if the last uphill turns out to be hard to maneuver, you will have seen most of it. The path is not very long, but wear hats and sunscreen because there is no shade out there! Once you're back from the path you can have piraguas (shaved ice cones with fruit syrup) to reward yourself for the hard work :p. There's a vendor on the other side of the SJ Gate and several on the Paseo itself. HTH! :)
bling19572010 Posted July 14, 2010 Author #3 Share Posted July 14, 2010 Can you give me the name of a good tour operator in San Juan who could give us a tour of the forts, the rainforest, Old San Juan, take us to the pier to catch a cruise, etc. all with the consideration of a 77 y/o woman in a wheelchair? Thank you.
amapola Posted July 15, 2010 #4 Share Posted July 15, 2010 Sorry, I don't know anything about tour operators, but search on this board for some names. I know people keep mentioning various ones they've used.
