Are shorts okay for men at dinner?

Recommended Posts

Last May on the Holiday, the maitre'd asked that men not wear shorts to dinner. Most diners respected his wish. We found that request odd.

On which nights? Elegant night or everynight?

I would have a talk with him and ask him why we would not be allowed in if we were dressed and packed in

accordance with Carnivals dress code.

Last year, I wore shorts and a polo shirt and even tennis shoes to dinner on casual night- no problem. I did wear a coat and tie to elegant night, which is appropriate, I think. Last year, my son and I went from dinner to the casino where we played craps for quite a while in our suits and had sort of a james bond thing going. And we won, too.

The only thing that really annoys me is guys wearing baseball caps in the dining room. Can we all agree that is not good? Last year, a guy at the next table wore one every night and I swear on formal night he dug out his "nice" cap to wear. What a tool.

I do not like hats in the house..it is a thing learned from the generation before mine..now one is lucky if they are nice cowboy hats half the time in casual dining here..(for hat wearers that is..a growing percentage)...silly to police anything these days..but I would go for this one..hats off inside..especially at dinner!!:) And baseball caps..omg...only at outside work and sports..:D. (and personal collections..they are like shot glasses for some people).:p

I have to laugh. One of my friends and his wife grew up in Bermuda. Seating at the main dining room that evening was cruise casual. My friend and his wife strode in. The wife wore a jacket atop a white blouse and a khaki skirt. My friend wore a blue blazer atop a dress shirt with a silk tie. Below that he was wearing plaid shorts (which matched the blazer), black calf length dress socks and black garters! The funny thing about it was that the two looked quite snazzy and were probably among the best dressed that evening.

Cute..personally..I would love to see at least long pants..long sleeve shirt and tie on elegant nights..but then there is the Scottish kilt..and true dress Bermuda shorts can be snazzy:):D.

We will be leaving in about a week for our Carnival Glory cruise. My DH asked me to post a question about the men's dress code. He would like to wear dress shorts, a polo and a nice pair of shoes for the regular dinners and evening entertainment. He is bringing a blazer, dress shirt, a tie and long pants for the "formal" night. Will he be okay or should he wear long pants all the time at night? On the formal night do most men keep their long pant and blazers on for the evening entertainment? We plan on doing the piano bar and seeing some of the shows at night. Thanks for all of the great info I've learned here.

Are they allowed? Yes, on casual nights.

Are they OK? Depends who you ask. I never wear shorts to dinner anywhere. I do change after dinner, even on "formal" night.

I agree.....i do the same thing.....wear slacks to dinner, then run back and change into comfy shorts to hangout in.

They won't say anything except maybe if you wore them for a formal night. I have no intention of dressing for dinner everynight this year. My last cruise I would often through a dress over my bathsuit (not a dressy dress either) and it was fine. I didn't even dress up for the 2nd "formal" night. We are on vacation who wants to dress up - some people do but not myself espically since it's just for dinner, everyone changes right after so whats the point - ruin your good clothes with food and then change back and hour later. Lots of people make a big deal out of the first Formal Night. It took us a half hour to get in the dinning room with the parade of people and pictures being taken.

It was pure torture for my daughter who hates to wear dresses or skirts. I won't even make her go through it this year, she can miss dinner twice (they server alot of the same things on the Lido deck) or dress in something more comfortable. Let them kick her out (I bet they won't).
