mom2dina Posted July 27, 2010 #1 Share Posted July 27, 2010 We are cruising on the Glory on August 19th. Does anyone know if there is much to do in Saint John, New Brunswick (canada). Not sure if we should book an excursion? Which excursion would be best for a family of 4 (dd 10 ds 8). Thanks for your help!
jks336 Posted July 27, 2010 #2 Share Posted July 27, 2010 http://www.jetboatrides.com we did this in june 09 when we went. the office is right off where the boat docks. like 40 dollars and you can do the dry (tour of the reversing falls) or the wet (jet boat) was a blast on that one! lol.. bring a change of clothes, or do what one person did and go nekkid under the water suit type they give you lol. we did both of the tours, was fun. the jet boat tour is a taxi ride away, with tip 10 bucks each way. fin Posted July 27, 2010 #3 Share Posted July 27, 2010 Is that reasonably near the Magnetic Hill or the Reversing Falls?
golfadj Posted July 27, 2010 #4 Share Posted July 27, 2010 We did an outstanding tour thru freedom tours.
lives to cruise Posted July 27, 2010 #5 Share Posted July 27, 2010 Rent a car. Hertz is less than 5 minutes walk from the Port and you can go see the Caves and travel the coast and stop and have a wonderful lunch.
stoddaj1 Posted July 27, 2010 #6 Share Posted July 27, 2010 Is that reasonably near the Magnetic Hill or the Reversing Falls? The reversing falls are in Saint John however Magnetic Hill is in Moncton which is about 1 1/2 hours away. It is neat but I don't think it is worth the long drive. Saint John is a small city and there isn't a whole lot to do. However the waterfront and downtown area are fun to roam around... lots of pubs etc.
Bunkie103 Posted July 27, 2010 #7 Share Posted July 27, 2010 Definitely book a tour. We didn't and it was cold (October) and rainy, so we didn't much enjoy our day.:(

golfadj Posted July 27, 2010 #9 Share Posted July 27, 2010 The nice thing with doing it privately is a small group and we had the time to go back a second time and see it in the other direction.
MrPete Posted July 27, 2010 #10 Share Posted July 27, 2010 The only thing that looked interesting was the jet boat, but DD (9) was too young. In three visits, we have generally just walked around the center of town, up the hill, the city market, had a nice lunch (last time at a place called Billy's at the top of the market, a walk in the park, some boutiques, and back to the ship. We also were blessed with great weather all three times. I understand the reversing falls are within walking distance, but running water just doesn't do it to me in any direction. Captain Carnival Posted July 27, 2010 #11 Share Posted July 27, 2010 We did the Kayak and Lobster Bake Combo and just LOVED it!!!
lumpkin8 Posted July 27, 2010 #12 Share Posted July 27, 2010 Walking through the very small city is very nice, and there is often a crafts fair going on in town. The city market is lovely for shops and some food. I have been to the city 3 times on 3 separate cruises. ON a Princess cruise they offered a shore excursion to a chocolate factory, about 1 hour outside of the city. It was very low key, but would be quite enjoyable for kids, and it is a little different. It seems the company "invented" the valentines boxed chocolate hearts. Not sure if all ships offer this tour however.
KroozFoolz Posted July 27, 2010 #13 Share Posted July 27, 2010 For great info on Saint John, NB - see this thread posted on the Canada board by a local: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1147722 We did the local transit authority sight seeing tour mentioned in #5 of the first post in the thread linked above. One of the stops was the city market. While we were there we made reservations for lunch at Billy's. Reversing Falls is another stop on the tour. After the tour we walked via the pedway back to Billy's for lunch, then walked in the park across the street and the cemetary across the street from the park before walking back to the ship. If we are ever fortunate enough to get there again, I hope to go to Irving Nature Park: http://new-brunswick.net/Saint_John/inp/index.html
