The article you posted was obviously a rare event, most unpredictable, which I certainly appreciate. I live in a very quiet university town, in the mountains of Virginia. There is no safer place in America -- except for the fact that the worst massacre of university students in American history occurred here on April 16, 2007. There is no way to protect against random terror.

 

I am very used to traveling the world independently. My wife's anxiety is due to the history of conflict in that part of the world, although it is somewhat irrational. In fact she should be used to conflict: a few years ago we were caught between war parties just as a war broke out on the day after our arrival. Of course, it was a tribal pay-back war in Papua New Guinea, and we were able to stop one of the war parties and negotiate for a splendid bow and arrows, which still hangs in our living room!

 

The notes on this thread have been quite reassuring. Thanks to those who have written.
