pinebro Posted July 30, 2010 #1 Share Posted July 30, 2010 Is it possible/advisable to do the drive up to the canyon, to the end (Kalalau lookout) and back on the 2nd day in Kauai? We plan to leave early am for good "shadows/colors" and ship leaves at 2pm. Also, about how long would it take to do RTH all the way around, with some stop times? (starting from Kahului around 9am) hoping to be back in Kahului by 4pm.

If doing the entire Road to Hana all the way around, I would do it the first day in Maui so as not to risk missing the ship. As far as the canyon, it may be possible to do it, but I will warn you that I have always found traffic extremely heavy on Kauai. Very few four lane roads. It is about 35 miles from the boat dock to the Canyon which means probably more than an hour to the canyon. With the ship sailing at 2:00, all aboard is 1:30 p.m.. If you got a VERY early start, you might be ok. (overnight rental car parking is available at the Anchor Cove Shopping Center and you can "reserve" a space as early as 9;00 a.m. the first morning. Head to the office of this scooter rental place. It is in the Anchor Cove mall and they will sell you a pass for $20. We picked up our rental car and then drove to the mall to purchase the parking pass. http://www.kauaimopedrentals.com/index.php?pr=Contact_Us

Depending on how much time you want to spend in the canyon, yes, it is possible. There is one main lookout for the canyon, so you should be able to see most everything in about 1/2 hour. The drive to the top Kalalau lookout shouldn't take that long. We stopped a few times along the way to look out and take a few pix. We went about 3 years ago and the road up to Kalalau is not in the best condition, many, many potholes so the going is very slow. But once there, the view from the top is magnificent. but if you get an early start, and you don't dawdle along the way you should have no problem.
