Rangiroa DIY drift snorkel?

Can anyone tell me whether it is possible to snorkel one of the passes or otherwise drift snorkel in Rangiroa without a guide or is it only possible with a guide? How close is the drift snorkel area to where the shifts arrive; I believe this is a tender port. Would it be within walkable distance or is there other transportation available without having to book through a guide/tour operator?
