snorkeling....better on the beach or from a boat?

We are interested in snorkeling and I've read that Roatan is known for their great snorkeling.

 

Now trying to decide whether to snorkel from the beach...or would going with a snorkel excursion from a boat be better?

We went with Upachaya ($60 per person included pickup and dropoff at the pier, and lunch) and got to go to the edge of the reef where it drops off into the ocean - it was like being suspended in mid-air next to a mountain. We don't snorkel much (it was only my second time) and thought it was amazing and well worth what we paid for it.
