Fan Confiscated - Carnival still hasn't properly informed all of thier own!

IMMHO Life is too short to spent this much time still worrying over a fan that was taken away because someone broke the rules. A rule is a rule and whether or not we agree or disagree with it doesn't matter.

This is one reason why we always use a copier to increase the size of the print so we can actually see the "fine print." And we not only do this for cruises but everything.

Yes, there are rules...but exceptions to "the rules" are made every day on every cruise ship.

Since an exception to this "fan" rule has been explained as "as long as it is deemed safe".... then Carnival should take the time to actually look at the fan and "deem" it as safe or not.

They obviously did not do this....because if it was deemed unsafe, the OP would have not been allowed to use it in their cabin.

Carnival is the one that makes these rules and then allows the exceptions to them...and as such...I don't think consistancy is asking to much.

That is not what had me pissed!

Though I have started entire threads over Carnival's lack of policy regarding how people are handled (or not) in the Concierge line. I have on multiple occasions come upon the same situation (person being helped in designated line is not Platinum). I can fully understand them utilizing every available guest services representative when needed. The problem is that a few times (more than a couple), I have waited while they help a non-Platinum person there and the other reps continue to call upon people in the regular line ( it should go both ways!) whereas in that case, I feel it would be more appropriate to help the Platinum guest whose specially designated line is not helping a Platinum guest. I have literally been in that line 15 minutes while a Blue card holder went on and on about her mother's lost glasses. I know that they were trying to be helpful, but at some point they should have asked her to step aside (as it was going NOWHERE) and see if they could help the next guest in line behind them -- yours truly who just needed change and an envelope for the Matire d' !

.. but as I said, that is the topic of entire other threads. NO, I am not being snobbish (thinking that everyone should bow down and move aside), I just feel that I have earned certain (advertised) perks, and that they are being watered down. Of course THAT is also a SURPRISE SURPRISE kind of event itself! ;)

Tom

Though... it's not a rule! What defines "hazardous" here? In some cases "hazardous" can be defined as a Neanderthal with too much alcohol or testosterone in their system that gets in fights and is subsequently thrown off the ship (as also apparently happened on our sailing)!

Agreed, life it too short to sweat the little stuff - but we shouldn't let people trample us needlessly either. My blood pressure (which is not high anyway) would likely be lower if I kept turning the other cheek, smiling the whole time.

I declined and said "no, I want MY fan returned or else we will debark the ship". I also told him that in our final suitcase, which had not yet arrived, there was a curling iron and a flat iron. I asked if those were permitted, he said yes. I let him know that in almost 50 Carnival cruises this had never occurred and that if either of those items were removed I would exercise their Vacation Guarantee and get off at the first port of call.

You have got to be kidding? Over a fan being taken?. This is a prime candidate for the "most ridiculous complaints" thread.

Hardly...

There are principles involved here. Some hold them to higher standards than others...

This was a kind of last minute cruise anyway. I have posted on here over the years that I would likely never sail on the Destiny - for reasons I needn't elaborate. However a good friend was on this sailing as was our favorite casino host (now in management).

I also learned on this sailing (did not do my homework) that cat 9A cabins (and I suppose balconies as well) don't have refrigerators.

This needn't turn into a clash of those with certain perks and those without.. or those who feel that others come across as privileged (look up PERKS and see what you find).

NO WAIT... this is CRUISE CRITIC, and things often go astray in predictable directions...

Tom

I was only messing when i asked the question what the op meant with blue card comment. Thought it wss funny...

HERE is a link to what is stated on Carnival.com (FAQ) about restricted items. There it states:

• Electrical devices such as fans, power strips, multi plug box outlets/adaptors, and extension cords will be removed if determined to pose a hazard and returned the last day of the cruise prior to debark.

This is the fan in question:

75434860_4u9Qy-M.jpg

It was virtually brand new - and in perfect shape (no cracks, chips, frayed cords, etc..). It is all of 11"x11"x6" - fairly compact/small.

Tom

As I have that exact model of fan sitting behind me, I can tell you it is a well built fan and unless it had a frayed cord, which would be obvious to spot, there is no way it would be a hazard unless it was cracked wide open.

This would not even be a problem if Carnival had adequate HVAC systems on their ships.

Hey Tom,

I feel your pain:(

If you need it to sleep, or for other reasons that directly or indirectly affect health while on the ship, I recommend attaching an official looking "Medically Necessary" sign.

Save you the aggravation next time...must combat inconsistant rule application problem.

Not at all. The lack of adequate AC is Carnival's cabins is a main complaint on Carnival. Anyone reading these boards the last six months is aware of that.

Something tells me that this thread will meet the same fate as the one I started yesterday about the 15 people led off in handcuffs when the Destiny returned (reportedly due to drunken fighting). That thread was closed - though at least not deleted. It degenerated into a "class" "low class" word volley exercise.

YEP!

Though this cabin was able to get COLD. I also bring a small digital thermometer with us so I can accurately determine the temp. I don't want someone from maintenance coming to check on a problem and say, "no, it is cool enough for our standards". Ours would consistently drop to 65.5 with both AC vents wide open (day or night). Quite impressive!

It has a magnetic back, so I can always find some spot on the wall to place it (not an exterior wall). This marks the second time that I have left it behind... :( I apparently need to go over my packing list when I return as well!

Here is a pic of one I left behind on the Dream in December (another chilly room - though we have had hot ones as well)!

Tom,

Way to go!

After reading the replies to this thread, I think I'll include a letter in all of our luggage indicating that any item removed for any reason will invoke the Carnival Vacation Guarantee. I'll also include a copy of the current list of prohibited / allowed items as well as a copy of the vacation guarantee.

Some may not understand the point that it's not about 'ruining a cruise,' but only about standing up for what you believe in. For me, my vacation time would only be enjoyable if I didn't turn the other cheek. I have no issues at all with those who take it all in stride; I also take most things in stride, but because I find amusement in them rather than tolerance on my part.

I'm glad you were able to get your fan back. However, I would not have taken the approach you did. Last I checked, Carnival owns their cruise ship. If they decide I cannot have a fan, then I cannot have a fan. I plan on taking a flat iron and a power strip. I know, going in, that I have a chance of having them taken from me. If that happens, I will not go berate the unlucky chap at the Purser's desk, and then gloat about it in a forum.

Hi Tom! We have the same fan....can't sleep without it!

Please tell me (now that we have "jumped Carnival ship" and are heading to Celebrity) we can bring ours onboard (Celebrity) without problems.

Hope you had a great cruise regardless.

Linda

Hi Linda!

Interestingly enough, when all this started with Carnival earlier this year, I started THIS thread on the Celebrity board (and one on NCL as well). Apparently nobody has had any problems on those lines... we certainly have not!

The cruise itself was OK.

Dining room: great service and wait staff. Food tasty!

Room service: used two times, each time was on hold 15-20 minutes before someone picked up. Thumbs down.

Entertainment: Enjoyed "Music Network" (again)!

Casino: Lost $ playing BJ. Though I did get two straight flushes playing VP for about 2 hours total (and one of those hands was dealt to me). The staff pulled a no-no: I play two hands of BJ at a time (3rd base) and Cheryl sits to my left. One of the pit people whispered to the dealer and he then asked her to leave the chair if she was not playing. I said to him "you are joking, right?" he was not. I colored up about 75 green chips and left for the night. Their loss! ;) We got the official "of course she can sit with you" later on - but the damage had been done.

Ports: we FINALLY made it to HMC -- our 3rd attempt. Beautiful beach. Had a Cabana (shared it with DGP1111). I am REALLY happy it had an AC (creature comfort spoiled here)!

Chirpbird,

Perception is an amazing thing; I read every word of Tom's post and didn't perceive any berating nor gloating.

Yes, they do OWN the ship. But I own my own decision process and life - If I choose to debark THEIR ship, that is MY choice!

I am not gloating about it, BTW! I am posting my review of an experience.

I did not berate him (CHAP at Guest Relations) nor did I ever raise my voice. It was all "matter of fact".

We got both our fans onboard last week but we put in our carry on luggage, along with our extension cord, power strip and hair dryer.

Anything "questionable" we always put in our carry on not checked luggage and since all the items mentioned below have been hit or miss getting onboard we did in our carry on.

We also got a fan onboard the Dream last week. However the bag that it was in had been opened and we received a "searched" letter but nothing was removed. Not very consistent I guess...

Tom,

Room service has cut their hold time in half since last year!

I knew you'd enjoy HMC and the cabana. Have you tried one of the cabanas in Roatan yet? They are waaay nicer, though the beach isn't comparable to HMC.

We have not yet been to Roatan. We did have the Legend booked (going there) for next month. I decided to take my office staff on a longer cruise. Oddly, only ONE person decided to take the FREE cruise offer, so I am letting her go - and the rest of us WILL WORK! ;) :D

If I had ever worked in a place that offered a free cruise (this would be their 4th) I would have jumped through hoops to go! Different strokes... some said it was "too long", or that they would rather take the (unplanned) week off to go visit family, etc....
