What to do in Progreso?

We have contacted Pablo for a tour while we are in Progreso in Feb. Did you go to the beach club at the end of the tour that he calls Yucatan Beach villas? Just wanted to know what it was like. Thanks,

We had a fantastic time in Progresso on Wed Feb 2nd on a fishing excursion with Cliff McCaa and his crew. Cliff met us at bus stop (where all buses coming off the dock drop their load). He drove us approx 15 minutes to the nice/safe/modern marina where he keeps his boat and we launched quickly after a potty stop. We powered out for approximately 30 minutes and quickly started getting lots of fish, totaling 50 by the end of the day. We had 4 guests on board, but one did only a little fishing. Cliff had a crew of two natives who only spoke spanish, but they were very friendly, and very skilled. Every time they got a hit, they quickly passed their line to one of us guests who then had the joy of bringing in the fish. We caught some on our own as well, but these guys know all of the tricks. The sight seeing was great as well, with not only a pod of dolphin but also several very large sea turtles swimming near by. Cliff is a great down-to-earth guy, a native of the US who has lived in Progresso for a long time. Fishing is clearly a passion for Cliff. We didn't take any sea sickness pills and felt fine the whole time, but one of the other guests had trouble, so perhaps it is a good precaution. Cliff had sodas and other beverages available all day on ice. The boat has a clean flushing potty on board, a bit cramped, but it was totally private and appreciated after a few drinks. After fishing, the crew cleaned approximately 10 fish and made ceviche, in which the fish is "cooked" in lime juice. It was EXCELLENT and there was plenty for a large meal for everyone. As we couldn't take the fish with us on the cruise, the crew split our catch, and I was happy to think we might have contributed in a small way to their livelihood. Clif even showed us a few of the multi million dollar yachts in the marina. Clif was very attentive to the time and got us back exactly when we wanted. A very full and fun day, including food and drinks. We have done several other excursions from crusie ships in Progresso and this was by far the best excursion in Progresso. Cliff split the excursion fee equally among the guests, so with our group of 4 the cost was just over $100 each, very reasonable. If cost is a factor for you, you might try to find some other folks to join you. My guess is that the boat could very comfortably sit approximately 8 guests, but Cliff can guide you on that.
