Petropolis -- tour or on our own?

We have one day to spend sightseeing since our flight home is near midnight. From various posts, it looks like Petropolis is worth a visit. However, I'd like to know if anyone has visited Petropolis and can tell us if it is a day-trip that can be done on our own, or if using a private guide or group tour would be better?

 

If doable on our own, any pointers? We do not speak Portuguese, but have managed to get around on our in other ports of call despite the language barrier.

 

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.:)

Petropolis is wonderful , but I´d recommend a private tour to take advantage of your day. It is in the mountains with the sights a bit "spread out". I´d highly recommend a meal at Locanda Della Mimosa , one of Brazil´s best resaturants.
