cruisegrandma3 Posted September 27, 2010 #1 Share Posted September 27, 2010 Just got back from Freeport and trying to find out the name of the trees that grew in Freeport. They have long (may 8-12") pods. I've only come up with Catawba but it doesn't look quite right. Anyone have an answer?
ilangal Posted September 27, 2010 #2 Share Posted September 27, 2010 Does it also have red flowers? If so, you make be referring to the Poinciana.
Rosefloater Posted September 27, 2010 #3 Share Posted September 27, 2010 Is this what you saw? If so, it is a Tamarind Tree.

It wasn't blooming but I looked up the Poinciana and it looks exactly the same when the blooms aren't on it, just the seed pods. Thanks for responding. FlaGrl4Evr Posted September 27, 2010 #6 Share Posted September 27, 2010 Without seeing an actual picture, it could be a Candle Tree. They are indigenous to South Fla and the Caribbean Islands. It could also be a hybrid called a " Midnight Horror Tree" they look very similar but are considered to be a little more rare than the candle-trees. liddybugg Posted September 27, 2010 #7 Share Posted September 27, 2010 Could it have been the flamboyant tree, Royal Poinciana, Peacock Flower. I have seen these and love them...I bought some seeds but had no luck. When we go on cruise in January to Key West, I'm going to see if I can find one and have it shipped to my house, since I can bring one back on ship..
