QM2 funnel

Cunard Cruiser

Recommended Posts

I too looked at those "windows" under the QM2's stack while I was on her during "The Tandem Crossing", and noticed upon close examination there are closely spaced vertical slats set back in the openings. I have since been told that those "windows" are air intakes for the marine jet engines that are located under the stack.

The openings according to one of the onboard videos were added "because the bridges in NYC were built too low for the QM2 to have a tall enough stack to keep the exhaust fumes from descending onto the aft portion of the ship".They allow additional air to be forced up the stack to add velocity to the exhaust so it is carried high enough that the fumes do not get carried down onto the aft areas of the ship.
