Returned today off Dream :( They need help !

There is no question this is a problem on the ship and it also seems to be isolated but in different areas at different times. .

I spent a week on the Dream from 9/18-9/25 and I didn't smell the smell once and I was all over the ship. When we went on the Triumph, we almost cancelled because of so many "stinky" reviews. We went anyway, and didn't encounter a foul smell until our toilet clogged up. They unclogged and brought us fans. I am doubting that some people are smelling something, but I am very very odor sensitive (migraines) and there was no issue on the 9/18 sailing.

I'll be there on the 6th so I will be able to see (or smell) first hand. We all know there is an occassional sewage smell on the lower decks, but it is hardly unbearable or lasting, that's not the complaints that have been posted about the Dream.

Just my 2 cents after reading through all these posts: Do all ships have sewer smell problems from time to time? We were recently on the Pride (which we love) and there was a smell almost nightly on Deck 8 just off the aft elevators. Did not ruin our cruise at all, we just walked a little faster through that area when the smell was present. Wonder if it had something to do with the crew closet located there. Again, not a deal breaker.

Also, concerning Carnival's cracking down on potential trouble: A young woman we met onboard was having a real good time the first few days. By about day 3 she told me her drinkng privileges were "suspended." Actually, I think a lot of her "real good time" was simply her outgoing personality but Carnival must have thought they had good reason to cut her off. We saw her and her husband the next day and she was still pretty vibrant, even when sober, but we never ran into them again after that, so I don't know if she was suspended for the whole cruise. Anyway, it seems Carnival may be doing a better job lately trying to keep the rowdies in control.

Just to clarify, the original problem on the Dream wasn't the usual transient odors that often affect almost every ship at sea. Instead, it was a problem in the design of the vent stack that caused the entire forward section of the ship, particularly the open decks and balconies, to be awash in a sewage odor during certain wind/weather conditions. This was confirmed to me in a discussion I had with two senior officers while on board back in May.

As you can read in this thread this was a design problem that they were supposed to be retrofitting to correct in June or July.

Whether the original odor problem has been solved, and the smell that the OP is discussing is just the common problem you sometimes run into, I have no idea. I was certainly under the impression from previous reviews that the big problem was fixed during the summer.

As an Italian born in Italy could you qualify this statement to me?

I really think this was a compliment in that Italy has less tolerance for excuses and in that way looks out more for justice in a good way. I live in Italy most of the year and they don't buy the excuses that work very well in the US as far has whether you broke the law or not. Hat's off to the Captain who insists that poor behavior will not be tolerated on the ship.

  • 4 weeks later...

If you google Carnival Dream Fight Video, you can see it is caused by 10 unruly young 20 something year olds, that were escorted off the ship in Costa Maya, they should have been prosecuted.

Anyway we are getting on "Dream" Saturday November 20, 2010 E. Carribean, second time with Carnival, we really enjoyed the first trip on Glory back in 2005.

I will post a review right after we get back ... my wife is terrified of bed bugs ... hotels in the northeast are infested. I can't find anything regarding any on the "Dream" and I hope I don't.

I sailed on the Dream in May and had a fabulous time, there was no fighting that I was aware of - the food was great, we had no smells in our room, everything was Super Duper!

Im sailing my first time with carnival tomorrow, and the boards have been full of bad reports lately.

Im still sailing with an open mind, knowing a day on the seas is way better then a day at work!

Sailed on the Dream in March (spring break!) and had a wonderful time...no smells, great service, no fights or rowdiness! Our 7 year old son loved the "waterpark". Ship was a little too big for us but design and layout were great. Would go again for sure!

I can't say I always blame them. There were people even questioning if a cabin on the Dream could cost $4000 and others saying "Oh I never smell anything on the ship" even with the repeated comments and reviews stating they also smelled it.

I've seen it happen before and it will continue. People relay an honest report of their thoughts and opinions about their cruise and they get bashed for it.

Seriously. I wouldn't want to come back either. People can't seem to post their own thoughts about their own trip without the cheerleaders taking it so personally and attacking the poster.

I haven't done my review yet, but I'm already hesitant, as it's just not going to please everyone.

Did I have a great time? Yes.

Does the Dream smell? Yes. Worst area was the aft pool deck, and in the hall (but not room) on deck 8.

Is she understaffed? Yes.

Would I cruise again? Absolutely!

Course I don't have many posts, and that seems to have some bearing on how reviews are received as well. Can someone tell me the magic number before my opinion counts?

Your opinion counts on the first post. :)

The only time a review is questionable is when it's from a "one-post wonder" who creates a name just to post a 100% negative, usually vague & general, review to the effect of "I'll never cruise ABC Cruise Line again". Then they never come back. It happens on many of the cruise lines' boards, but seems to happen a lot here.

You're right--some posters hate anything negative about their favorite cruiseline, but most of us want to hear all the dirty details that might have an impact on our cruises. :)

I totally agree with you...I think some people just come on her to stir the pot so all the "stuff" doesn't sink to the bottom..I would have liked a few more details also but I don't think the OP is coming back to respond..We loved the Dream and are planning on going back and doing a B2B to do some of the things we missed doing the first time....:)..Dennis

Honestly, who can blame ANY poster with a less than perfect view of their outing for not returning to post? Let's face it, they get cruisified (ha!) for posting in the first place!

If the ship I were on smelled like POOP it would ruin my holiday. Period.

I guess in the end (no pun intended) it's all in what you're used to.

you have me mixed up with another poster my friend.........Pragmatic..means ..practical.....just check the dictionary...but read the entire definition...because it is not usually the first definition

Often you will find the archaic definition of a word first. This definition no longer applies to the word as it is used commonly now.

I agree that pragmatic means practical, and certainly not intolerant (as that word is used with a negative connotation).

 Who are you saying Bye to?

Thanks for that tip! :) We occasionally have that "bathroom smell" in our staterooms. It's awful.

Isn't it obvious?.

Sounds like the OP is a quick hitter. Comes on, vents and really doesn't critique the cruise or the ship. Just complains and goes away.

Maybe I've been lucky but I've enjoyed every cruise I've been on regardless of line. I don't get too excited over the small things and have yet to see a fight but I'm sure the hillbillies come onboard from time to time ;).

Some people for whatever reason have ultra high expectations or just show up grumpy for some reason.

we are headed to the Dream shortly, we board on the 27th. I can not WAIT. I believe a lot of the cruise is up to you - you make it or break it. And I am going to have a great time.....

(and since we got dumped with a foot or two of snow last night I am even MORE excited!!!!)
